Root Rooting clarifications..

Im considering rooting my stock HTC desire (froyo etc) but only for reasons that i can install apps as system like Wavesecure etc. Ive got no interest playing with custom roms etc.

A few questions i cant get definitive answers to:

(i) is the rooting JUST going to give me SU access rights or is it going to wipe my current stock rom, HTC sense and so on? I want to keep my current room intact and just have SU access on top of that

(ii) Do i need a complete factory reset after doing so or will i lose everything currently installed by doing so?

(iii) Is it going to affect things like marketplace availability, future ROM OTA updates arriving and so on?

(iv) I assume its easy to undo the rooting without lasting issues?

Is unrevoked via SLAX boot the way to go with this?

Help with these appreciated!
 
1) Yes, but it doesn't set the ROM up properly for 'normal' rooting behaviour.

2) No.

3) More than one question. It won't affect market, it will stop you from using OTA updates.

4) By flashing an RUU, yes. You'll probably need a goldcard if your phone is branded.

I guess it depends. You have the option of rooting leaving your current Stock Rom, or you may choose a new ROM. With Unrevoked, it's your wish. It merely gives you SUperuser privileges.

With some ROMs, you do get OTA updates, but they fail verification and cant be installed. It happened to me with Neophyte's ROMs

Very easy. You can put a Stock RUU in much the same way you flash it with Unrevoked.

Unrevoked is one of the best ways to go about it. Minimum knowledge needed. Just learn to install adb and windows drivers, and the rest is as easy as a click! :D All the best!
 
If you manage to apply an OTA update to a rooted ROM you'll more than likely end up with a phone that won't boot. At best you'll get a ROM that does boot and isn't rooted.

Good thing that ROM Manager stopped me, then! :D I changed both toggles in recovery in an attempt to install it!
 
Cheers for those, im looking at the xda-developers link above for the official stock ROMs but is there any way i can find out EXACTLY which one is installed on my phone? I can find the version number on the phone but not the exact filename it took when it updated itself to 2.2
 
Go to Settings>About phone>Software information and post the software version in there, e.g. 2.10.405.2
 
Ive got a stock unbranded HTC desire (provided by 3 uk) running 2.2.

Software version is listed as "build:= 2.10.405.2 CL226611"

Im trying to make sure that if i root i have a proper working stock rom to put back on the phone as if it never happened.
 
Oh so you want to root now, but you want an official RUU so you can revert everything to stock incase you need to return it?
 
Or if if i decide i dont need root/want to get OTA updates again etc.
But yes thats exactly it.

OR is there some way i can backup my existing stock rom rather than having to download one?
