rooting failed, despite following instructions.

I have a Galaxy S2 KF1 kernel version which I decided to root because I wanted to back up the original firmware files. My research online came to a lot of guides and eventually I went with this rooting guide as the kernel's last 3 characters version on the pictures matches my phone.

During the rooting procedure, I followed instructions to the letter, downloaded all the necessary files and everything seemed to be going well. Odin reported that the flashing was successful and rebooted the Phone... But the phone stays stuck with the Samsung start logo and the yellow warning symbol on the bottom section of the screen. Figuring it may take some time to load through, I left it for an hour and the phone is still "stuck". I decided to turn off phone, disconnect USB, and re-repeat the entire flash process - this time, using the 'original' kernel file, in the hopes of restoring the kernel back, but it remained stuck... and now it randomly reboots to the loading screen repeatedly instead of loading the homescreen.

So now, with a phone that's technically a "brick", I have little knowledge on recovering my phone back to its previous working condition. I'm currently downloading the latest firmware, using the program: Check Fus and am planning to reflash the downloaded phone's firmware through Odin, by using this guide as a last resort... but before I do all of that, is there an easier means to fix the problem and restore my phone? Am I doing the right thing by downloading and flashing the phone using firmware that's downloaded by the Check Fus program?

I'll be waiting for answers before I continue on with the firmware flashing idea. I appreciate any helpful comments in getting my phone working again. Please help me.

Try holding down the Home key + Power button and Volume up at the same time until you boot into recovery mode. The phone must be switched off when you do this otherwise it will not work. When in recovery mode use the volume keys to scroll down to wipe cache and factory reset press the home button to execute it. See if that helps you.

Pressing VolUp+Home+Power does not boot into recovery mode. Took out the battery and retried and still no luck.

Silly thought and you might already be doing this but when you hold the 3 buttons down you do keep them held down until the recovery menu appears right ? It does take a few seconds before it appears.

Yes, I've tried different combinations.

  • Pressed until the startup screen appear... release.
  • Pressed long enough - startup screen appears and reboots displaying the screen a second time. release.
  • Pressed for a full 20 seconds. release
All combinations does not display the recovery menu.

Don't worry your phones not bricked. If it boot loops there's still life in it yet. Can you still get into download mode (vol dwn, power, menu). If you can use this guide to root again.
[27.09.2011][CF-Root v4.2] KE2/7/8,KF1/2/3/4,KG1/2/3/5/6/7,KH1/3/4,KI2/3/4-su+bb+CWM4 - xda-developers
I have tried this a little earlier... just for further clarity, I downloaded

CF-Root-SGS2_XW_OJV_KF1-v4.0-CWM4.zip

extracted the .tar from the .zip file, fired up Odin and placed the extracted file to PDA section and flashed.

I still am getting the startup hang and occasional bootloops.

I will attempt again a second time, just to be sure.

After a few flashes and further reading, I managed to figure out the cause and did some precautionative measures to fix the problem.

  1. In Windows' Task manager, there are three processes belonging to KIES that I forced to close. (The process description shows KIES in them)
  2. I turned off antivirus and firewall applications because in the previous phones I owned and flashed, antivirus and some firewall programs have the tendency to cause problems for flashing.

After those two issues were addressed, I restarted download mode and re-uploaded CF-Root kernel using Odin and my phone is alive again. WHEWW!!!! Now to make sure recovery mode works and continue backing up my firmware.

Thanks Jigsy and Shotgun for your helpful suggestions...

Nice. Glad you got it sorted. It was probably number 1 , kies doesn't like odin (sorry that never crossed my mind). As long as kies is closed every other flash should be fine. As much as I love samsung for the phone I really wish they weren't c***s.
