Root Rooting for WiFi Tethering Only

I looked at the complete newbie's guide and there was a member on the first page who was in the same situation as me--didn't care about putting his own ROMs or whatever, just wanted to tether. He got an answer and it seemed to have worked for him. However, I didn't really understand.

Can somebody please explain specifically what are the minimal things necessary to do to root the phone in order to allow me to successfully run an app like WiFi Tether for Root Users? I don't need anything else.

Also, in the newbie guide it says all the settings will get lost. Is that even if you do a minimal root just for the purpose described above? If so, how do I back up in order to get all my settings back, or will I just have to suck it up and set up my phone all over again?

Thank you; sorry for the possibly stupid question.

You can keep everything stock, but I highly recommend getting S-OFF on this phone (not as scary as it looks), flashing a new hboot and radio, and switching to one of the great custom ROMs we have to choose from. This phone suffers a lot in its stock state and it's really easy to change that.

the only people who say they are "fine" with the stock rom and the phone as it is, are the people who dont know how much better the phone COULD be.

do the S-off and custom rom, the instructions are not as scary as they appear.

you wont regret it.

btw your google account saves most of your settings and they are backed up when you sign into it again on a new ROM. saves your contacts, emails (of course, its gmail) and phone settings, and the stock browsers bookmarks i think.

also, you can save all your SMS messages with SMS backup and restore in the Play Store. its worth it, it backs them up to SD card, you install new rom, and when your in the new rom you just restore them by downloading that app again.
