Root Rooting grief, please help!

Hi, I own a Samsung SGH-I897 (running 2.2 Froyo), which is chock-full of AT&T's infamous bloatware and silly restrictions. I've been trying to root my phone for about two months, and have met no success.

I've tried the SuperOneClick program, but that just stops responding no matter what version. All my drivers and such are up to date, USB is set to debug mode, etc.

I've tried using the "update.zip" method, where you boot into recovery mode and load the file. I've tried multiple different "update.zip" files, and all of them give me the same error message, "E:Signature Verification Failed". There was one that gave me a different error message, which I unfortunately don't remember at present.

I've heard a lot of good things about Android and so far it's okay, but I'd love to be able to use it to its full potential. Unfortunately, I seem to be hitting nothing but dead ends when trying to root. I've scoured your forum as well as XDA for info, but nothing seems to be working for me. If my hair wasn't short I'd probably be ripping it out in frustration right now.

Any help is appreciated, and any other info you need to help me just ask. Thanks.
