Hi All first time poster here,

I have an Evo 4G with Sprint, I am trying to Root it using revoked 3.32 also tried 3.21.

I have done a few factory reset's
I have a goldcard
I have the newest HBoot drivers

Each time I try i either get

Validation error: Backup CID is missing

or

is your software version too new error

please let me know if you need any other info, I will be driving home and will check back in an hour.

Thanks!

Did you format your sd card?
Have you tried installing and then uninstalling htc sync then rerooting?
I think theres a few more suggestions for those errors on the guide...

Sorry i did not include everything, heres the deal.

I started off by factory resetting my phone and formating the SD card. I then tried revoked 3.32 and it failed with Validation error: Backup CID is missing.

Next I installed turned my SD into a gold card and tried again with no luck.

I installed and uninstalled HTC sync and have tried quite a few different things other post have suggested. Im not sure if it has do with my phone (i got it on launch day). Here is all the system info;

Android Version = 2.2
Baseband Version = 2.15.00.11.19
Kernel Version = 2.3.32.17-gee557fd htc-kernel@and18-2 #15
Build Number = 3.70.651.1 CL294884 release keys
Software Number 3.70.651.1

H-Boot Info
Supersonic EVT2-2 Ship S-Off
HBoot-2.10.0001
Microp-041f
Touch Panel-Atmel224_16ab
Radio-2.15.00.11.19

At this point you have s-off and are partly rooted. Select recovery while in hboot and see if you can get to recovery or if you get an exclamation point and triangle.

I'll bet you are exactly where I was a few days ago. S-Off, but rom is not rooted, and no recovery. Post back, its all easy going from here once we know if you have recovery or not.

Go to this link: http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/259446-clockwork-amon-ra-pc36img-files.html

Download the PC36IMG.zip file for Amon RA 2.3. Follow the directions to flash it. When you are done with that we can go to the next step. This will give you a recovery that Unrevoked was supposed to flash but failed to.

Ok, i d/l 2.3 placed it on the root directory, rebooted into hboot, it asked me if i wanted to update I press volume up for yes, it updated then i rebooted.

Reboot back into hboot and try recovery again. It should take you to the splash screen then to Amon RA recovery. If it does, then you are good to start flashing if you want to go with a custom rom. Have you found a rom that you want to flash?

i have not found a ROM, if you can kindly point me to good one that would be great

Here is a list of recommended roms(and other stuff) from the members here.
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/284413-roms-kernels-download-page.html

If you want to stay close to stock, I would go with Sprint Lover's. Mikfroyo, Fresh, Mins Warm, Kings, Koni Elite are all custom roms with the sprint bloatware removed and most offer free wifi tether. The links will take you to the thread where most have screen shots to show what they are like. The Rooting Guide has step by step instructions for flashing. One thing though, before you do or make any changes to you phone. Go to recovery and make a nandroid backup. Make at least one with wimax selected as it will backup the keys that your phone uses for 4g. The keys are unique to your phone and not replaceable as yet if you lose them for some reason.
