Root rooting help

I get an "error while getting root privileges" on my desire while trying to root it. can anyone help? I've tried it 3 times now. I have all the right downloads. h-boot is 1.06. phone is from u.s. cellular.

Thanks,
Dan

You're rooting with alpharev x? I.e the only way to root 1.06.

Mandanick wrote a tutorial here. It's still beta

It is actually quite an easy root, not as quick as Unrevoked but all you have to do to Download AlpharevX and boot your phone into fastboot usb then run AlphrevX as an administrator. Then download the Clockworkmod recovery for the bravoc then fastboot flash the recovery img on the device then ur done.

what does this all mean. sorry. I'm kind of a newb!!

tried rooting my phone and failed. I'm not sure whats wrong here. i got the beta key and it worked. custom recovery I'm still working on.I copy the zip file to my sd card. then get to hboot and hit the recovery button and the phone shows htc, vibrates then goes to a black screen with a red triangle and an exclamation point. is there a special place I need to put the file on the card?? frustrated!!!! feel like a smuck!! help please.

thanks
Dan

Now bear in mind that I have a GSM phone, so haven't use AlpharevX, so am making suggestions from general knowledge rather than direct experience, and it might be worth asking in MandaNick's thread. Given that caveat:

Your problem with root is that you haven't completed the second step "Achieving Custom Recovery". "fastboot flash" is a method of flashing a phone over usb from a computer. "<recovery.img>" means "insert name of recovery.img file here" (the one you just downloaded). For setting up fastboot on your PC (assuming you use Windows) look at SUroot's adb and fastboot guide. For Mac or Linux you download fastboot as a separate program - google, or let us know if there's a problem and I'll post a link.

i did what you said and it didn't work again. I used android flasher and it did its thing. then went to achieving root, put the program on my card. and I still get what I explained before. still frustrated. any thoughts??

If you are still getting a red triangle and exclamation mark when you select recovery then you haven't succeeded in flashing the custom recovery. ClockworkMod will give you a menu of options, including "install zip from SD card", which is what you need for the root step.

So did you use android flasher to flash the clockworkmod img? I'm not a Windows person, so have no experience of android flasher - I just use fastboot commands directly (as in MandaNick's guide). But I think that getting recovery flashed is the key here.

I prob. won't be online much longer today, but if you could tell us exactly what you did (in boring detail - you never know what is important) and what responses you got then one of us can probably work it out.

Does it take a while to put the recovery mod on the phone? the phone goes to hboot and does nothing while android flasher is running. started flasher and i clicked on recovery and inserted the mod as instructed. says recovery copied, adb reboot command sent and pushing and flashing recovery. does the phone need to be turned off?

  • Download SDK Tools only
  • Open the .rar file, then drag and drop the folder "android-sdk-windows" to the C: drive
  • Right click My computer > Properties > Advanced > Environment Variables
  • under system variables click "path" and click "edit"
  • at the end of the line add a sem semi colon ";" and without a space put C:\android-sdk-windows\tools - It should look like ;C:\android-sdk-windows\tools then click ok.
i did this ...typed in the command "adb shell" and it says.. error device not found. does this mean my computer is not set up right??

postt1.png which one do i flash it to. I'm sorry about this.. But I guess I learn the hard way.

I thought you were trying to use android flasher now you're randomly talking about adb. You've not given me any new background on what you're now trying to do so I can't advise

What pops up and disappears? If you double click on fastboot that's exactly what happens. That's because you're doing it wrong. Please read my fastboot faq so you know what you're doing

Dan you will be happy to know that I have successfully achieved root. I read everything over twice and once again. I learn the hard way. thanks for your patience. I am a little dyslexic.
