Root Rooting help?

Hi, I'm new to android and I'm new to rooting. I've read the faqs and forums, but I'm totally lost. I have a few questions.
1. What is the best way to go about rooting?
2. What are the must haves (backups, etc.) when rooting?
3. What are ROMs?
4. How can I use rooting to free up my internal memory?
I'm lost to the terms so please explain what they are if you use them.
Thanks

Read the Faq's etc again and again, if you can't get your head round it, probably best not to bother attempting any of it.

What (s)he said.
I don't mind helping where I can but everything is in that guide.
Try just reading one till you understand it, then move to the next.

May seem a bit of a hassle, but anything we say will be in that guide.

Also, it is much better to understand what you are doing then just following instructions.

Like the above comments read read then read it again. Not all the information is required but it provides an insight to what further things you can do.

I rooted my phone last week and will easily admit I was nervous about doing it, but I had copied and pasted the relevant instructions onto a word document in the correct order so I had everything I needed to hand. As I had read and re-read the info, the process of rooting was surprisingly easy. I had issues with Gparted, and I would put that down to my inexperience but SUroots method (on the hard drive) is by far the easiest, and watch the video as well as this helps a great deal. Installing the ROM (I went for the pre-rooted stock Gingerbread per teppic74's post) was again very simple.
