Root rooting htc incredible 2 and whatnot

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum!

I got my HTC incredible 2 with Verizon Wireless in early August 2011. I attempted to root it later on, and didn't exactly succeed. I vaguely remember following a guide hosted on some wiki. In any case, it didn't work, and seeing as this was my first time attempting to tamper with a mobile phone's OS, didn't care enough to delve further into the topic. Since then, I've had a few minor problems.

When attempting to update the OS from the menu option, the firmware is downloaded, but then, when the installation begins, that familiar blue alien with a yellow triangle notification appears on a black background. At that point I have to start a factory reset, and my phone returns to how it was at first, except for the ****ed up os that doesn't really change anything visually.

Another thing is that when I start up, after a certain point in the startup video, lag occurs, and that particular image stays until the HTC logo appears on screen.

Furthermore, for the past couple of weeks I have been able to use some of google's apps, such as gmail or the android market. ( I use a few apps, and really don't give many shits, I probably should, but the ones that I frequently used did not have any issues whatsoever).

At this point, I would love to either

1) complete a full root (and possibly load jelly bean? if possible)
2) complete reset of my system and just go along with the upgrade scheme that htc/vzwireless have.

How would I go about doing this? Thanks. Also if I need to post any additional information, I would be glad to do so

Hi permafrst, and welcome to AF :)

I've moved your thread to the Incredible 2 All Things Root forum, as this should be the best place to get advice for your device. I'm sure the good people here will be able to help you out.
