Root Rooting info

Brand new to the smart phone market. I hear all the talk about rooting your phone. Can someone please tell me why it should/should not be done? What are the pros and cons. What would I stand to gain by doing it? Thanks in advance!!

Moved to All Things Root.

I will start with the cons.
It voids your warranty.
If you aren't willing to spend time learning what you are doing it can cause issues down the road.

And the pros.
You can remove the bloatware installed by VZW/HTC.
Custom version of the OS (roms) can be installed.
You can backup your app data.
By installing custom kernels you can overclock/underclock your phone.
You get full control of your phone.
More customizations are available.

There are more pros but more people will chime in.
