Root Rooting my phone

Ok people, had it nearly a year, and it seems HTC are probably not gonna update it as much as id like so im thinking of rooting it.

What would the community suggest is the easiest and best way to do it and what software should i be running on it?

Then it comes to choosing a ROM. Look at that first!! (EDIT - as in the "how to root")

EDIT - for the ROM, it depends what you're after... I'm on CyanogenMod7 - Vanilla Android, not like the stock HTC Sense, but really good!
