Root Rooting newb...got half way, then messed up!

Hi. I'm totally new to rooting phones...I found your FAQ threads really useful, but I'm sure I'm doing something wrong!

My HTC Desire has started to really p*** me off lately; some annoying niggles like selecting a text thread and it opening a totally different person's, or the date formatting staying in US despite changing it (I'm in the UK).

However, the big one is the total lack of available app memory  So I want to root it, so that I can actually install/update apps again!

The phone info so far:

PVT4, S-OFF.
H-boot 6.93.1002
erase size = 20,000
F/w 2.33.161.2

Does the above mean I was successful with my first attempt at rooting? I

I tried following a guide regarding copying a recovery image to the SD card and using the recovery part of the bootloader, but it didn't work.

What is the next step I need to make to increase my memory capacity?

I was hoping to install CM7 ROM too, just for a bit of a change of appearance.

Many thanks,

Rob

Hi, you have not rooted
you have however done Revolutionary s-off
you are uusing 20000 erase size so thats good
what you need to do now is get cwm2.5.0.7 recovery image from the tools thread in my signature.
read the fastboot faq regarding the use of it and its functions
boot to fastboot (back+power) and fasboot flash recovery <recoverynamehere>.img
this will give you a working recovery
boot to recovery (select bootloader, then recovery when in fastboot or voldown+power from off) then do a backup of the device
from here you can choose to root the current rom by flashing the superuser zip file from revolutionary or flash a custom rom
be aware that if you are to flash a custom rom you will need to wipe data/factory reset in recovery.
another note is not to use the powerbutton in recovery. it doesnt cause harm but will make you shit your pants and the screen will go blank

no you dont,
please read the fastboot faq
you would put the cwm .img file on your pc and use fastboot to flash it whille booted in fastboot mode.
reading our guides will teach you a lot. they are the best

They are too! Flippin awesome. Read them, followed them to the letter, noob did it first time, no issues.

Only problem I had was flashing rom, got to HTC screen and stopped. Recovered from backup, did it again, job done.

Thanks to all the ITKs on the forum, grand job

Took me a couple of goes until I realised I had to have "fastboot usb" on the screen to flash the recovery. Back up is done, and I've managed to boot into Cyanogenmod.

Massive thanks Rastaman (and SURoot and everyone else for the guides) :)
