Help rooting note 2 at& sgh i317

Well here's my question. Thinking about rooting my at&t note 2. My question is. The only reason I'm going to root my phone is to run a firewall. And a few other apps. After rooting can I leave my phone like it is running 4.1.2 or does things get changed. I love the phone the way it is. Like I said I would like to run some apps that require root access. Thanks for all ur help.
