Rooting Orange-branded SGS2

Slug

Check six!
I've read the CF-Root v3.7 thread several times and think I've got the gist, but before I possibly brick my new toy I want reassurance. :o

PDA: I9100BVKE2
PHONE: I9100BVKE2
CSC: I9100ORAKE2

Kernel version: 2.6.35.7-I9100BVKE2-cl195878root@DELL101 #2

Will the KE2 file from post #2 be okay to flash with Odin? Prior experience is only with HTC handsets so I'm a total n00b again, and out of my comfort zone. ;)

Update:
Debranded by flashing the generic (XEU) KE7 firmware then rooted with CF-Root.

No issues, other than (a) an inability to restore a stock Orange firmware due to none yet being available and (b) no longer able to update via KIES due to the CSC being unsupported. I was aware of both before going ahead. :)

Thanks in advance.

Rather than creating a new thread, I'll post here. Got my SII (Vodafone branded, PDA - i9100buke1, Phone - i9100buke1, CSC - i9100vodke2) yesterday, love it, want to root. Had a Desire previously, and thought I had mastered the art of rooting, unrooting, custom roms etc, however, seems the Samsung way is slightly different, a bit daunting if I'm honest, though I guess practice makes perfect! From the main guide, should I be doing anything else in the root procedure due to the fact that my phone is branded. Any advice is much appreciated guys.

Hi, I'm in the same boat as you. Came from a desire 2 days ago. My SG2 was three branded I Rooted then flashed to KE7 generic and then re-rooted. Followed the guide and everything went ok :)

Thanks mate, I'll give it a shot tonight. So what ROM are you using now then?

Hi,

I've just bought an Orange branded SGS2 from eBay. I currently use a Motorola Atrix, so I feel a bit out of my depth here - seems to be quite different. I notice that Slug said he can't update via Kies - is this an issue? I don't actually have the phone yet, trying to soak up some knowledge before it arrives

Cheers

Im still learning here so I could be wrong but I dont think you can update with kies if you are carrier branded. Just use odin instead.

I assume that, once Orange release an updated firmware, it'll show up via Kies. My inability is due to using a stock firmware to root, which seems to confuse Kies due to the handset still thinking it's running the Orange firmware.

We have a dedicated Samsung Infuse 4G forum where you'll hopefully find an answer.

Hi, I have flashed my previously TMobile branded one, loads now without the TMobile screen and trademark tune, etc, but what do I do with the "CSC" bit, I don't quite understand this part? Where exactly do I find mine?

If you enter *#272*<your IMEI># in the phone dialler you should see the CSC listed at the top of the screen as "Sales code". It should match that of your newly-flashed firmware rather than your previous carrier-branded one.

Sorry to hijack, but I need to get tethering on my phone working for when I'm away on work. I've an Orange S2, but it's got the I9100BVKG2 kernel in it.
Has anyone got tethering to work after rooting?

I've not been able to find a matching insecure kernel, which one have other people used. I'd also like to get rid of as much orangeness as possible.

I presume I have to root it first; I've found basic instructions here, but can't find a ROM, could someone recommend one please?

After that I'd like to install a stock ROM? Which would be the appropriate file?

Sorry to ask, but I just want to be clear about things and not brick my phone.

All the best

Chainfire's ZS_OZS_KG2 package works fine - I tested it myself last week.

I'd also like to get rid of as much orangeness as possible.

The easiest way to do that is to flash a stock unbranded firmware, but the usual caveats about voiding the warranty apply. You'll also need to reroot it afterwards with the appropriate insecure kernel for the new firmware.

Thanks for that, sounds great.

So I put the new kernel on, then I flash the stock firmware and then put a new kernel back on it. Can anyone recommend a stock kernel version known to work and a matching kernel. If anyone has links, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks

You flash the CF-Root kernel to gain root on the current firmware. If you wish to replace the Orange-branded firmware then you flash a stock firmware to replace that, then re-root that. You'll find a guide and links to firmware/kernels here.

That would work, but I'd advise just rooting and getting everything working as you want it. Once you're happy then consider updating the firmware - the "one-step-at-a-time" theory. :)

Well, I've rooted it and everything seems to be working fine, what sort of tests should I be doing and where do I go from here?
Thanks
