Root Rooting problem

srm1973

Lurker
Hi all,

Hope someone can help

The power button on my HTC Desire stopped working so I thought I'd root and install a custom room to use the trackpad as the unlock button

Rooted without any problems, installed custom rom but phone wont load past white HTC screen, I can boot into recovery mode but the volume button doesnt seen to move the options from fastboot to recovery/clear storage/simlock option , what to do?

First we need to know what custom ROM you have installed as some have 'special' requirements which may mean they won't boot unless you meet the requirements.

I had a similar problem and it got solved by flashing another ROM.:) Here is that thread: http://androidforums.com/desire-all-things-root/642769-boot-loop-after-flashing-rom.html

More details would help such as the Recovery you are using, ROM you tried to flash etc.
Wait for 5-10secs before you try to use the volume button to navigate...

rom is [ROM] RunnymedeMod007 (Sense 3.5 | GB 2.3.5 | A2SD+) [STOCK | CM7] [v26 | 04/11/12]

not tried anything to recover as yet apart from trying recovery mode

Ah that'll be it I think. The newer Sense ROMs are too big to fit on the phones internal memory so need an ext partition on the SD Card where a portion of the ROM sits.

Try a non-Sense ROM or a Sense 2.1 (or whatever the stock was on Desire). You will need to boot into recovery though to install a new ROM, as suggested above wait a few seconds before using the volume keys to navigate.

I did not when the hboot screen comes up on the screen

Its shows
SD Checking

Then lists some zip files and says no image or wrong image

It's normal for hboot to check for certain files on startup. Those messages don't indicate a problem.

After those you should be able to use the volume keys, if they are working. If "volume down" is stuck you will boot straight into hboot but be unable to navigate the menu. Not sure whether a stuck power button can block navigation - guess I'll try to test that in a second...

Ok, I tried booting into hboot without releasing the power button and indeed I could not use the volume keys.

But if that is the problem, how did you get into recovery to install the ROM in the first place?

No idea i'm sorry

Ive managed to get into fastboot via cmd prompt

ive got the following options now

Clockworkmod recovery v2.5.0.07
reboot system now
apply sdcard update zip
wipe data factory reset
wipe cache partition
install zip from sdcard
backup restore
advanced

where should i go from here

ClockworkMod is the recovery, so now that you are there (as opposed to hboot) you can install a ROM.

Do you have a ROM .zip on your card (one that doesn't need an ext partition to fit on the phone)? If not, download one onto your computer and then copy it to the card. You should be able to mount the card on your PC over usb while in CWM - if there isn't a "mounts and storage" in the top menu look under "advanced" (been some months since I used CWM).

Once you have a ROM zip on the card, do a factory reset then install zip from sd card, select ROM zip, confirm you want to install.

Any Sense 1.0 ROM or AOSP (no Sense) Gingerbread ROM should work - there's a list of ROMs here.
