Root Rooting Question

This one is weird to me. I've rooted my DX using z4root, so I'm familiar with the procedure. I have a buddy that I'm trying to help root his original Droid. We tried z4root 1.3, but it didn't take (no superuser app). I had him check his software version, but his phone doesn't list it. His baseband was c 01.43.01p and his build was FRG836. Is there a different version of z4root that I need?

Think I've found the problem. I don't believe he had USB debugging enabled.
