Root Rooting Questions

Hi, Long time reader, First time poster.

Hi i was planning on Rooting my OG Droid for the first time but i had a few questions about doing so.

First, the main reason i wanted to root is because i was reading on here and various other sites, and alot of what i read was that by rooting you can force apps2sd even if the Dev didnt give the option to? I have tons of apps, and my internal memory is pretty much maxed, im sure that also is part of the reason why my phone is so slow to open things and what not.

secondly, the options to overclock and remove bloatware was another reason why i wanted to root.

so i guess if someone could confirm my above statement that would be great. i also have a few other noob questions? like ive read alot that people like bugless beast, sholes, miui and others. I personally dont like how miui looks but what im looking for is one that give me lots of customization but not to technical. Im basically looking for something that will speed my phone up and free up my internal memory. the wifi tethering is a + but not a must have. Also if i root and go to a custom rom is there a way to back up my contacts / apps ect?

Thanks to all who supply me with information.

Some ROMs (depends on the DEV) have the ability to move apps to SD. I don't think Bugless Beast has that option, but I'm not sure on that. I do know that Cyanogen, UD and Liquid have that feature. Most Devs remove the bloatware, I can't think of hardly any ROMs out there with bloatware on them. Overclocking is one of those things where you will have to experiment a little because some phones are picker than others.

As will CyanogenMod. Plus I've read that the first setup of Bugless can be a pain, so I personally wouldn't recommend it as a first try. But that's just me.

I have found Bugless Beast to be very easy to set up. It is basically the stock ROM tweaked for speed/performance and now it has a lot of the gingerbread look to it (it is still based on 2.2 though).

It does not have any bloatware unless you choose to load it from the market and you can download wireless tether from the market and use it. You can also put any of your apps on the SD card. Most any ROM Ultimate Droid, Cyanogenmod, Bugless Beast will do these things for you. The biggest difference is what you like and how much you want to "customize" your phone. Bugless Beast is more stock which suits me perfectly. Others like to set their phone up unique to them and go with Cyanogen or Ultimate Droid among others.

The best advice is research what is out there and try the ones you think will work for you. Always remember to make backup before flashing any ROM.

You are correct. As we found when the overclocking kernels first started coming out, each phone is different; therefore each person's phone is going to react differently to different roms.

I base my opinion on roms overall from my months of reading hundreds of posts in the rescue squad area of DF where statistically bugless was one of the roms people with the problems were running.

There have been mixed results with the use of z4root. Personally, I don't know why it would work for one A855 and not every other one as the files needed are all within the app.

In fact, why not try it? You'll need to have a file manager like Astro on your phone (free from the market). Once you have that installed go here on your phone:

menu -> settings -> applications -> unknown sources [x] -> development -> usb debugging [x] -> home

Then download the file I will attach here, if you do so with your phone, it'll download to /sdcard/download. Then using Astro, navigate to it (z4root.1.3.0.apk) and select it, then install it. Once it is installed, you should be able to go ahead and run it and have your phone rooted. Please let me/us know your results.

Thanks and good luck
