Root Rooting questions

I just rooted my Droid X using z4root, I found it fast and easy in comparison to the other methods. It worked first try. I really just wanted the wi-fi option, but since it is done I figure I should optimize the phone.

I have a few questions at this point that I am hoping can be answered:

1. Do I need to be concerned about over the air updates to the phone tripping the efuse or anything? I don't plan on changing the ROM or any involved stuff

2. What bloatware can I delete with no problem? Blockbuster? Amazon? etc.

3. I am using Titanium Backup to backup the whole phone. Does that make sense? Is there something else I should be looking at?

4. What else should I do to avoid bricking my phone accidentally?

5. What can I do to speed it up and keep it running quickly?

Thank you in advance.

Before you do anything else, download the Droid X Bootstrapper from the market and make a backup. That way you can easily revert to stock to accept an OTA or fix your phone if you get a little too zealous.

1. An OTA will remove root, but that's not much of an issue atm with z4.

2. Read this. IMO it's better just to rename it so it's easier to resolve any issues you might run into.

3. Titanium backup will back up an app and its data, but it won't back up any settings. The custom recovery provided by bootstrap will allow you to create an image of your entire system. ROM Manager is handy to have so you can more easily rename, backup, and restore, but it isn't necessary.

4. Read this for a good knowledge foundation. At this point, you can't mess your phone up too much. Worst case scenario you'll have spend 20 min flashing an SBF and restoring a backup.

5. Overclocking and custom ROMs will make your phone run quickly and smoothly.

Edit: Also, I would highly recommend downloading the file manager Root Explorer to easily access and edit system files.

+1 ^^^^^

After backing up everything (so you can get the next OTA), if you want to get rid of bloat, I suggest you install a rom. Apex is a good first rom.

I can't emphasize enough how important Droid X Bootstrapper is. It has already saved my hide once when I went into a bootloop because I disabled the BlurHome.apk and forgot to rename it back before a factory reset. Ugh. That alone is worth the price of admission. Read a bunch of the sticky threads on this forum and you'll learn a ton. Do not do ANYTHING until you have a decent sense of what's what and how to make a backup and restore. Then, you can pretty much do anything you want sine you can almost always recover from the pain of too much exploration. I'm still only using LPP but I've have disabled a TON of bloatware and apps that I don't use so I like to think that I'm running my own little mini-custom ROM. But, Apex and Gummy are definitely wetting my interest.

So I downloaded this but I have no idea what it does or how to use it. Is it something I really should learn how to use? Or is it something I can wait to learn?

It's similar to explorer on your computer.

Scroll down to /sdcard and you'll see the contents of that.

Long press on a file to bring up options of what to do with that file.

Don't mess with anything unless you have explicit directions on what you're doing.
