Root Rooting Questions

So I had recently bought a Samsung exhibit ii 4G for Tmobile and I want to know what rooting is.This is my first time I owned/used a Android device so I am a complete noob. What are roms? What kinds of roms are there. How do I Root my phone that is running 2.3.5
What can I do with a root phone.how do I even use a root. What happens after I root it.
 
I would love to root my phone, but I'm just personally too worried I'm going to screw something up and turn my phone into a paperweight. I can't tell you too much about it since I've personally never done it, but if you do a search, there's TONS of information about rooting and what you can do with a rooted phone. Just look in one of the "all things root" sections on this forums and do some searches.
