Root Rooting: Remember ph.#, voice mail etc?

My interpretation of rooting is it generally is wiping the existing ROM clean.
So how does it know what the phones' number is when the root process if finished?

How about ATT voice mail and all that? just curious how this is all retained.....

thanks

If you use the ace hack kit to only root, you don't loose anything, not even your settings. It's *just* a root. Installing a new ROM wipes everything, for sure.

You do lose all when you flash a rom, everything I've ever flashed the "my phone #" field is blank, you don't have to fill that one in, it doesn't really matter.

The voicemail one is blank too and you can write down that # before you flash or get from a friend in the same city with att.

When a few of my friends have asked about rooting, I've explained it by comparing it to something they understand: Windows. That is, the main logon is the admin account where I can change anything I want; screensaver, desktop, system files, install/uninstall software, etc...but the guest account limits many of these permissions. Same with phones. By rooting, you gain admin access, but stock from your carrier, you're only a guest. Understanding that makes rooting a lot less scary. Of course, you also need to be able to follow directions TO THE LETTER.
