Help Rooting stuck - please help

Hi, I'd really appreciate some advice with this problem.

I'm finally trying to root my HTC Desire using unrEVOked 3.32 on Windows XP.

unrEVOked seems to be stuck on "Waiting for bootloader; make sure driver is installed!"

I did install the HBOOT drivers and all: had Device Manager listing the Android Bootloader Inteface.

I know rooting should take a while, but I feel like this step should be quite quick. Is it normal for this step to take a long time? If not, is it safe to abort at this point?

UPDATE: I got a blue screen of date anyway and rebooting at that point doesn't seem to have caused any upset.

I'd still be interested if anybody had any ideas as to what went wrong so I can try again (in about a month when my nerves are restored).
