Rooting the SGSII

Hey guys, I have been glancing through the XDA Forums on the SGSII (AT&T), and don't know up from down on how to decipher any real rooting instructions or guides. Just looking for a little info on what I might need to root my SGSII lol. Any help is greatly appreciated.

You wont go far wrong here

And for a more detailed explanation on Odin look here

If you need any more help after reading through those 2, just shout

Yeah Hawker have good advice, good luck and I hope you don't have any issues.

I am moving this thread to the all things root section.

whats the different between secure and insecure?

If i do this, will it delete all my apps?

normally it refers to kernels. an insecure one is basically a kernel that will give you root access. Installing one of these will allow you to run apps that require root access, and allow you to make proper backups of your handset. you will get a yellow triangle on boot screen which can be removed by a usb jig, or by following the instcutions on xda.

However since cf-root 4.2, these come with the latest CWM and su, so are not as tried+tested as the versions prior.

And no, you wont lose anything.

Hello, I would like to root my Sgs2 I am a complete NoooB at this sort of thing but thought I would give it a go.

I can't seem to find a "kernel" (is that right?) for it. On my phone it is labelled as a 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKI4.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

If all you want to do is root for now, then go into about phone, then check your build number. the last 3 characters is the rooted kernel you need (eg. KG5, KH3, KI4 etc etc)

Just follow the guide in my first post mate and the one to download will be in there.

Sorry to sound silly but are there different kinds of rooting available then?

Thanks

Ok, after looking around I can see different things, if I was to put something like, Revolution on, how would I go about doing this?

Revolution thread on XDA

Download the .zip file (link in above thread) to pc
copy it to your sd card
turn off phone
reboot into recovery mode (VOL-UP+HOME+POWER)
backup+restore
backup
install zip from sd card
choose zip from sd card
navigate to zip+select

Yes. rooting gives you CWM recovery.
Alternatively you could install the Kitchen app and install it through this.
I've never done it this way, so i'm not the one to ask. I went the pre-root route! :)

Ok that all makes sense, I think...

I followed your link you posted for the rooting, and found 2 that it could be, what is the difference between:

  • XW_NEE_KI4: 2.3.4
  • XW_NEE_KI4-42: 2.3.4, CF-Root v4.2, SU 3.0, "insecure"

My Kernel version is: i9100XWKI4

Thanks for your help

There are reports that SU 3.0 has been causing some problems, so personally I would go for the first one. (4.1) but it wont make too much difference to be honest. end result will still be the same.

check what your build number is first tho. this is the version you need to be downloading. (they will probably be the same, but just check)

My Build Number says that it is GINGERBREAD.XWKI4

Is the one I posted the correct one?

What would happen if it wasn't?

thank you so much for your help so far

Ok, so I believe that my phone is now rooted. I have the superuser app so think that pretty much means I have.

Is there a way to get rid of the yellow triangle at boot up?

Now on to Roms, are these things like:

Revolution
Villain
Lite'ning
Cognition S2
SicOpaT
MoDaCo

Do you have any preference?

Also is it worth upgrading my phone to 2.3.5?

Thanks

Did you get a yellow triangle on boot? If so, thats you done.
you can also download root checker from the market to double check your install.
now that your rooted, titanium backup is a must.

Definitely go for a 2.3.5 rom. almost all are now anyway.
I'm on Revolution, and I think its great.

I did indeed get the yellow triangle, fantastic stuff.

Just got titanium backup, great feature.

Do you need to be on firmware version 2.3.5 in order to get those specific roms or can I stay on the same firmware? Currently 2.3.4

Thanks, you have been such a big help

You just need to go to the rom's first post on the xda threads and see which version of firmware it has been developed for.
if your going for themes (eg. JKay) then you will need the specific themes designed for your firmware (KI3 etc) and also note if your rom is odexed or deodexed, as there as specific themes for this too.

Almost all will be on KI3 by now, which is Android 2.3.5. most roms are deodexed, buy 1 or 2 (eg sicopat) are odexed.

Fantastic, everything now sorted, revolution Rom installed, latest firmware, marvellous.

Thanks you very much for all of your help

Thanks

have you downloaded the revolution kitchen app?? if so, the themes are on there and can be downloaded and flashed directly from the kitchen
