Root Rooting Tonight

Hello,

I'm going to root the NC for a friend tonight. I have a Droid Incredible so I'm very familiar with Android and rooting and custom ROMS. I'm just wondering if running Autonooter 3.0 will erase anything on her NC though. She has several books on here and I don't want any of that stuff lost. Also, running Autonooter 3.0 brings Android 2.1 to the front right? I don't need to load a custom ROM unless she wants one right? I think all she wants is access to the market so 2.1 should be perfect. Honeycomb is out I see but I hear it's pretty laggy?

Rooting doesnt remove, or change anything, except that it adds the market, root access and whatever you want to load on there. It will still be stock Nook software which is Android 2.1.

Sounds perfect for what you are doing, good luck.

One more question, I'm reading the nookdevs.com post on rooting and it says this:

You need a B&N nookColor (which we will call NC)
Before rooting, you need to complete BN's registration process, you will not be able to link your NC to your BN account to buy books after rooting. If you've registered it before see Deregistering Color Nook on instructions on how to de-register. Do Not Proceed with Rooting unless the Nook is Registered, You will not be prompted to register with BN once you have completed the Root Process.

The part I highlighted is my question. Does this mean that once I root, I won't be able to buy books using my BN account or is it just saying if I don't register first, then root I won't be able to buy books?

you will still be able to buy books etc. after root. as long as you register the nook. I think what they're saying is, turn on the thing, register it, then procede to root. Don't just stick in autonooter without doing that process first.

Awesome! Got her rooted finally. Now I'm having a bit of trouble with it being sluggish. The market seems to time out a lot. I get this message: Attention A network error has occurred. Any ideas what that's about?

have you rebooted?

there are minor wifi issues on mine, but far in between.

Couple other questions:

What exactly is soft keys. Do I need to checkmark that it starts everytime. I hate getting that prompt everytime I hit the Nook Key.

When I download something from the market it's not appearing in the extras right away. I have to reboot for it to appear.

If I want to download Nookie Froyo, can I install it without it wiping anything or will I need to clear all my data to install it?

soft keys are your graphical display of the keys on most droid phones like your incredible. :) Since the nook doesn't have them, you need the back button for sure in some apps. Yes, checkmark that it starts every time.

now go into the market and get a launcher....zeam or something and set it as default.

Thanks for all your help! I put LauncherPro on here like it is on my Droid. Pretty awesome stuff! I'm just frustrated with the internet speed. I can't connect to Facebook via the browser at all. The market will sometimes download an app but it takes forever. The actual download time isn't long but it sits on beginning download for several mins before it starts the download. I downloaded some Wifi Lock program that keeps the Wifi from cutting off (I heard wifi sleep was messing some people's connection up) but it doesn't seem to help. I've rebooted several times also. Anybody got any ideas on what's up with my connection? I'm running a WEP connection here so it's not the WPA/WPA2 issue.

i run WEP at home....no real issues for me. Sometimes wifi comes in and out, but it always comes back pretty much right away.

don't know what the speed issues and some webpage loading issues could could be. maybe its as simple as pulling the plug on your router and plugging it back in.

Yeah, give this a shot. I was having trouble with the WiFi at my work, I had them reboot the wireless router and everything was good.
