Root Rooting VM Intercept

I've taken a look through the Sprint Intercept Forum and did find a One Click Root for Froyo thread, but seeing as we're not yet on Froyo and since we'll need a thread for Rooting anyway, I thought I'd create one.

Those of you who have rooted, how did you do it?

When the Intercept first came out, there were reports of some things not working anymore(notifications to be specific - if I remember correctly), is this still true?

I'm no help. Mine is still stock. I want to root it but i dunnno if it'll mess things up if we do get the update.

After doing some research. I found two programs that are apparently able to temp root your phone. Meaning that you'll be able to get in, do what you need, and out and not actually affect the phone in any way. I assume that would mean an OTA would come through no problem.

Program 1 (SuperOneClick-via PC): [APP]SuperOneClick v1.5.5 (Root, Unroot, Enable Non-Market App, Get UNLOCK code) - xda-developers
Program 2 (z4root-via Intercept):z4root ~ Android Application v1.3.0 By RyanZA | Tools

Apparently, at this point it's not recommended to permaroot via these apps. But temp root works great.

Hope this helps.

I first tried rooting by flashing a ROM, but could not get my Win7 64-bit machine to recognize the ADB drivers, which was a common problem amongst 64-bit users. So I chose a second method, where no ROM was flashed, but instead I granted superuser privileges through a terminal after loading a file through the Android SDK. After a few weeks, the phone began to really lag, and the Internet stopped working, so I reset the phone, and have stayed unrooted since. I really only wanted to use Barnacle, but EasyTether works unrooted, so I'm satisfied.

I've heard good things about z4. I have no idea what flashing a rom or anything else means hahahah.

I'm considering temp rooting just for the heck of it, but I'm still scared lol

Great thread.

Does "EasyTether" use a cable? Can Iuse it to provide a connection over WifI to an Ipod Touch?

For me WiFi tehtering is all thats missing from 2.1. I can live with everything else.

Thanks

Ive been using z4root 1.3.0 on my stock intercept with no problems. I was able to temp root it and use root explorer to copy livewallpapers.apk and livewallpaperspicker.apk to /system/app then changed the permission to match the apps in the folder rw-r--r--
After rebooting the worked perfectly. I also temp rooted again and installed barnacle wifi legacy and it works great with my viewsonic g-tablet, decent speeds 0.8-1.0Mbit.

ok so as far as your rooting and being temporary are you saying that the wifi easytether still works unrooted? or are you just talking about the regular easytether? thanks!

Hmm. I ran z4, and it ran fine, reset my phone, but didn't seem to actually do anything?

Worked with 1.3, pay me no mind. :D

Question though... I downloaded Titanium Backup, and it doesn't seem to actually backup my system apps. If I delete something like Amazon MP3, how would I restore it to the system directory later if I needed to?

I would recommend getting Titanium backup and "freezing it" instead so it doesn't mess up your OTA update when it comes out.

Does it reset after you turn your phone off and back on again?

The main reason i want to root is to fix the voip. Anyone know an easy way to get the voip working? It just goes through the back speaker.

Good for you.

Do not do anything until the official update arrives. DO NOT use a Sprint ROM because you just do not know what can happen. When it comes to fundamental changes in your device, do not take chances because two weeks or so is not a long time to wait to see what the new update will give us.

Some people desperately want to Root yet they do not know what Root is. Some want added functionality not knowing that there are things available on the Android Market that might do what you need or want.

Do you want to run or install apps to your SD Card or just store them for later reinstall?

I use several free apps from the Android Market that allow you to back up all installed apps downloaded from the Market or perhaps sideloaded. I just installed some apps stored on my Zio's SD Card on my Intercept by simply changing SD Cards.

Why do you like TB?

I have no idea what I'm doing and don't want to brick my VM intercept. Is there a detailed step by step instructions on how to root my phone??
