Rooting walkthrough?

Brand new Optimus user here and moved from Transform. I want to root and upgrade to a customised ROM and have some Qs.
I understand that this involves 3 steps. Rooting, Custom recovery, ROM.

I tried rooting the hard way but never got pass the $ symbol i.e., never got the # symbol.
So, can I use the easier rooting method AND do custom recovery i.e. with Z4Root can I acheive that?
 
Z4root only automates the rooting process itself. You still have to do the custom recovery and NAND backup, if that is what you're asking :)
 
Just make sure after you run the nandroid backup to wipe the caches and do a factory wipe before flashing a ROM. You may also want to consider Titanium Backup to save all of your apps and settings.

It's awesome, isn't it? So much freed up storage and customization at your fingertips. I'm having so much fun with this. :D

Like Carrie said, no worries. This is my first smart phone and I've been relying heavily on this forum, AC, and XDA to figure out how this all works. Asking questions will help you to be able to answer someone's questions who's trying to get up and running. The forums feed my growing android addiction. :D
