Root Rooting - where to begin?

Hello dear androidforums users,

I have a T-Mobile Touch (aka HTC Hero) mobile phone. The phone firmware version is 1.5 and build number is 2.73.110.26. Software version is 1.0.0A6288. Can I root and flash this phone?

Sorry, I don't know much about the procedures so I request you guys to please point me towards a stable and fast ROM. Any ROM which you think is best for the phone will do. I read a lot about Froyd 1.5 ROM. If this is the best and stable, could you please provide a link to it?

Thanx for your time.

GOD Bless.

Thanx for the reply and the links Daveybaby.

(I must add here first that I have updated the device to Android 2.1 Update1 from 1.5)

I followed the first link and downloaded SuperOneClick.
When I run it, it displays the following message:

Thanx Slug!

Well, now I am facing the same problem which many users (probably) face! Read some good reviews about Elelinux Special Edition and want to flash that one on my Hero!

Do we have to root everytime we flash the phone? I mean will I be required to root the phone again or simply copying the Elelinux ROM on SD card and flashing from there will do?

Thanx for your time and replies.

God Bless.

Nope, you don't need to ever root again, since every custom ROM is pre rooted. To switch:

- Backup all your stuff, put the ROM files on your sdcard, reboot to recovery.
- Do a nand backup (nand + ext if you use apps2sd+).
- Do a factory reset, cache wipe and dalvik cache wipe
- Flash your rom.zip and then any additinal .zips
- Reboot

My instructions are written as if you're using the amon ra recovery. If you're using clockwork recovery, the steps are the same but will be laid out differently :)

If you're upgrading to a new version of the same ROM, often you can get away with out a factory reset and only wiping the two caches.
