Root rooting with linux

cheers fella. its exciting but scary! is it best to backup the stock rom before attempting to root with visionary? just gotta decide what rom to get then - much easier!!

Don't know if you can backup until you have root (bit of a pain)... Visionary is real stright forward... download to phone, open app and click attempt temp root. Once it says done, click attempt perm root... accept and it's done!

Get Radio and ENG S-Off (using the tools) - needed before you can get ClockWorkMod

At this point you get ROM Manager and flash CWM recovery - you can then make full backups before you flash ROM's. :)

umm, im a bit confused... i download visionary to my phone but do i need to do anything in windows during the rooting process cos the youtube video shows someone using 'easy radio tool' as well as visionary at the same time.

Use visionary to gain temp, then perm root.

The Easy radio tool is to get Radio S-Off... this means that you will be able to flash ClockWorkMod (from within ROM Manager) - you will be completely rooted at this point... also worth getting ENG S-Off, so you can flash radios (via fastboot commands) at a later stage (some ROM devs say that you're better using their radio with their ROM).

Don't worry about the whys/wherefores for now... the guy who created the radio tools ahs confirmed that he has NEVER had a complaint about his tools bricking a phone, so it's just worth doing!

EDIT - Easy Radio Tool is for AFTER you're done with Visionary.

Let me know how you're getting on with it

ok i cant find visionary anywhere on the market! its highly likely im being an idiot but i then googled it and there was a link from 2010 saying it got removed. unlikely as others on here rooted weeks ago. there were a few apps from visionary which look chinese but the top result is coming up with aria and rapzilla. maybe i started too late in the day and im going bonkers

Don't panic... I'll dig out the link!!

EDIT - think it was removed from the market AGES ago!

rhod - here you go:

19/Nov r14: VISIONary + one click root - Android @ MoDaCo

EDIT - you can go to the link with your phone and download it... from there go to downloads and install it (may have to turn off a function that is "only accept downloads from the marketplace" - it (the DHD)will tell you that though)

ah ok, so you install visionary through browswer not the market? Im a tool. is it ok to run the link through my phone and install it that way..?

THANKS!!

You're not a tool... we weren't being clear! :)

When I downloaded it, I did it straight off my phone :D

righto, i think its done! clicked temp root, click perm root. went to super user and all was good. i then did s-off selected the top option radio s-off, cid etc clicked do it then finish. do i need to reboot and hold down volume key again for anything or is that it now?

Sounds like you're almost there... you're now rooted but, while you're still messing around, go for the ENG S-Off... this gives you the ability to flash radios in future! :)

EDIT - can't remeber what the top option was... think it's Radio S-OFF, SUPER CID and SIMUNLOCK - that's what I went for anyway!

ok last question... with eng s-off do i need to temp and perm root again or do i just connect usb to dhd and clikc on the easy eng off? sorry for all the questions mate

Don't worry rhod... questions are there to be answered. You'll be in my position when someone else is asking for help on rooting soon!!

Once you've got root, you've got root! No need to try temp rooting, as you are permanently rooted!!

Really is as easy as the Radio S-Off tool... download ENG S-Off tool, connect up DHD, tick box to say you have Radio S-Off and click button to get ENG S-Off!

Then you have the droid as it should be!!!! :D

just my luck but ive encountered a problem... during the eng s-off it got half way and then a massage popped up saying "bootloader corrupt. do not reboot! seek help from xda" im a little worried!

ERM... Not seen that before... hang on a sec - will see if I can get hold of anyone on XDA

Can't believe it... you got so close and I haven't heard of anyone having an issue with the tools either!!

thank you. ill be staying in work for another hour or so depending on what i do next with this. ive sent a private message to jkoljo for a hopefull suggestion

Was just in the process of looking for his name (couldn't remember it exactly) - was going to do the same!

I'll get off (only live about 20 mins away from work) and keep you updated if I get any response (so far only been looked at 8 times, but that's not bad really considering I only just posted it)!

Should be sortable though!!

Your worst case scenario would be to keep the phone plugged in (or ensure that it does not turn off) until you hear from someone - but I'm sure that you will hear how to sort the issue!

I know that jkoljo is quite good... he got back to El P (albeit the following day) when he had questions about the 2 easy s-off tools... he said that he'd never had anyone say their phone was bricked when using them, which is why there's still hope!!!

EDIT - XDA's mods moved the thread to the HD section! (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1133950)

all good mate. i found a post in xda from another sufferer and got this reply:

"
I had the same error and nearly crapped my pants thinking I bricked my phone. Its not really a big problem. Go to Menu>Settings>Applications>Manage apps and clear the data from Superuser. Reconnect your phone making sure you're on charge only, usb debugging. Run the Eng S-off tool and watch your phone as it attemps to push the data. Superuser should pop up asking to let the Eng tool have privs. Click allow and it should work fine. CWM has been working great for me ever since!"

followed it and eng s-off is complete. going to reboot now. thanks for being a legend

Sweet as a nut - glad you got it sorted!!! Sorry I didn't have the answer for you! At least we'll know for next time we find someone with this problem!!!

See what I meant... now you have experience in rooting - invaluable to help others!!

thanks for being a legend

:D

mate i have just been looking at different roms and decided to go for cm7 first as it looks the dogs... read through a few posts saying you have to wipe and factory reset all this malarkey so i did. after doing this (havent flashed cm7 yet) and rebooted, ive found that rom manager, visionary and super user arent theremore (should have seen it coming from the word 'wipe' really!) ive reinstalled rom manager and the clockworkmod is showing 3.0.2.6 still. is it ok to now copy over the cm7 zip to sd card and reboot into recovery? also so i need to partition the sd and if so what size is best? thanks again for earlier

Don't partition the SD, it's not required. If you do, then do it via the PC, not Clockwork. It should be fixed in 3.0.2.6, but partitioning your SD with 3.0.2.5 turned your handset into a lovely brick.

As I say, it's supposed to be sorted in 3.0.2.6, but if you do it, I'd use the PC tbh.
