Help Rooting with No PC

Thanks for offering, that is very nice of you. I appreciate it. I am constantly asking my friends to ask me all types of Android questions to see if I can find the answer since I love learning new things about Android and a friend asked me which app he should use to root his HTC desire 510, version is 4.4.2. Carrier is cricket/at&t. He told me that he has already tried apps such as Framaroot, Universal Androot and WeakSauce and that they didn´t work. Which ones should he try?

I take it your friend doesn't have a PC either? While there are apps to root I personally would recommend usiong a PC if possible. It tends to be more reliable way of doing it. Also then you can put on a custom recovery and make a backup before making any changes to /system which is where you could potentially magic the phone into a pretty brick. Also I don't think you mentioned what phone / firmware it is you have?

I'll have a scan tonight but with HTC devices, your best bet is normally unlocking via HTC dev, installing a custom recovery, then using that to flash a root zip.

Good to know I can make someone smile then Oh right, I must have missed that sorry. Did you try the towelroot exploit? I think 4.4.2 was released quite a while ago now, I don't know device specific, did you check the kernel date? Unfortunately I have no experience of HTC since the first Desire was release however many moons ago that was so I can't remember what I went through with that, think I just followed the guiedes on here. But what @El Presidente is saying sounds like the best bet.

Settings -> About Phone -> scroll down to the bottom for the "Kernel version" area.

The build date should be the last line in that section.

(I'm guessing that's the kernel date that's needed...)

Thanks a lot for your answer it was very helpful, but after finding out the kernel version, how do you go about checking what rooting app may work for you (obviously depending on your phone and Android version). I know that those apps are no guarantee that your phone will be rooted, but I am just curious about that.

Well, I don't have a list or cross-reference of rooting apps or the kernel build dates they're dependent on, but the reason that our esteemed @El Presidente cited June 2014 for Towel Root is because the manufacturers will patch the exploits (and the dates give a reference point).

The https://towelroot.com/ website cites the XDA thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2783157 as saying that these devices are rootable with their exploit:

"Possibly invited: Every Android phone with a kernel build date < Jun 3" (2014)​

So, that's why the kernel build date is often key to knowing if the exploit will work on your device.

I dont really care if some doofnoodle in china has my device info. Kingroot workes like a charm. And it did install some crap root app,I wiped the device completely and installed stock deodex rom using supersu. Thus everything kingroot related was history. So kingroot is ok if your device has good developer support at least to the point where you can flash a stock rom.
