Rooting words need unglossing!

Hi,

I'm new to the forum, so...HI !

I've been reading around to get my head around Rooting and updating kernels etc etc.. but there are a few "Rooting words" lingering around that I wish to have cleared .

- What is KG1, KG2/3/4/5/6 - Does it mean the higher the number the more revised this version ROM is? (Is it a ROM? Or a Kernel?)

- What is ROM? Kernel?

- If I update to the leaked Android 2.3.4, does the TouchWiz also get updated? Or does it get removed because I certainly don't want it removed?

- What is CWM and what does it stand for? And is SuperOneClick, does it mean one click rooting, or something?

- What is XXKG1, XWKDD? I know they are different updates but what do they mean?

- In SGS2 it has it's own firmware when you connect through Kies, it says "PDA:KF3 / PHONE:KF1 / CSC:KF1 (TMU)", what is PDA, PHONE, CSC? What are they actually updating? Is this updating TouchWiz? What is KF1? Difference from KF1 and KG1? What is TMU?

- Odin?

- What is Android + SLP? What is SLP?

That is all for now, sorry for the amount of questions asked but once these are cleared in my head, I can continue rooting my phone knowing that I understand these concepts.

Updating the firmware will not remove touchwiz.

CWM stands for clockworkmod. It is a custom recovery. A recovery is a mode you can enter when your phone is switched off (Hold volume up, home key and power key). The standard recovery is not much good, all you can do really is a factory reset and install some updates. CWM give you a lot more options and is used for flashing roms, themes, apps etc.

Ahh! That made me understand the whole KF, KG etc.. However, does that mean i'm running an older version as there are KG versions? I have KF running at the moment. So having KG6 to let's say KG1, would mean that KG6 is the most up-to-date version?

And can someone answer the other questions please ^_^,

See my signature for firmware guide, the oldest firmwares are first and newest last.
As for the other questions.

Rom is the system the phone runs on like windows on a pc.
The Kernel manages hardware like cpu, memory and power (I think )
Odin is a pc application that is used to flash modems, kernels, firmware etc
SLP i'm guessing is Self Loading Program?

Few more muddle ups:

- In your firmware upgrades, there is Frankenstein versions - they are unofficial? However you have the XXKG5 official kernel but it's poland? Does that mean I can't use it on my UK bound SGS2? Because the CSC would be different?

- What is ODEXED and DEODEXED?

Stock XXKG6 made for CWM with added tweaks and so on.
It's themed as closer as it can be to 10.2 but it does not have extended power menu or multiple lockscreens. Also some small glitches in the theme are still present (will fix those and release partial update) some things might not be themed also (phone, contacts...)"

What is DarkyROM? Is that the developer? So are you Frankenstein? (not the character obviously but as the name suggests?)

Also, "Themed as closer as it can be to 10.2"? what is 10.2? Is that SGS2 firmware?

Kernels are not region specific only CSC is. My CSC info says OXA (Poland) and my phone works fine here in the UK. Maybe some on KG5 in the UK could confirm?
Odexed is how the standard firmware comes. It is when part of an app is placed in another file, so the app is split up. Apparently it makes the phone boot up quicker when odexed. Deodexed is when the app is recompiled so that all parts are in one file. Deodexed makes the apps more customisable and easier to theme.
