Root rooting

What does rooting do to my phone? Does it let me have a wallpapper screen and stuff like tht. does it let front camera work?

Rooting basically gives you "admin access" to your phone. You can install new skins/roms/etc. Also allows you to remove bloatware.

A quick search of the forum can give you a whole other list of awesome things that rooting your phone can do for you...and the environment.

Not too sure what you are asking but here goes some answers:

1) If you want to change your wallpaper, any phone can do that, just press the preference button and it should have a wallpaper option, or long click the current background on your homescreens and a prompt should show up for wallpaper. Now if you want different wallpaper per home screen, you need ADW Launcher. A launcher is a great way to customize, but certain launchers have little extras. For instance, ADW has separate wallpaper while LauncherPro does not.

2) A samsung captivate does NOT have a front facing camera. The things on the front that look like cameras are light sensors. These are the sensors that turn off the screen when you put hte phone to your face while talking.

3) Rooting your phone gives what is called "Super-user" access. Pretty much, coming from the factory or from AT&T, almost all the things in the system are blocked except regular vizual options such as wallpaper, icons, apps, widgets, and button commands. Rooting gives you access to erase the current operating system and go with a ROM, or it gives you the right to program something new into the phone (which an app can not do).

If you want to root your captivate, I recommend Super One Click v1.9.5 (or what ever is the latest one). It was the only one that worked for me out of the 3 or 4 that I tried.
But pretty much, from the sound of it, you are looking strictly for aesthetics of the phone, not the functionality. I suggest just going with a launcher like ADW or LauncherPro, and WidgetLocker. This combo pretty much customizes every aspect of your phone from lockscreen to the size of the widgets on your homescreens. Any other customization such as email apps and weather is down to apps you can download from the market.
