There's a reason why they were directed to the all things root section. Everything needed to properly root their phone is discussed there. How to set up ADB, how to install the drivers needed, and the many methods to root, not to mention the Roms that will work for the "V",If you really wanted to help(the first link you posted will definitely help them on making a decision whether to root or not)them you should have directed them to the best source for info and help for their phone. ALL THINGS ROOTInstead of just a link, maybe I can help out, since I just rooted my phone recently.
Rooting basically allows you to have "admin" permissions on your phone. This allows your phone to be completely unlocked to the features that the manufacturers and service providers block. Rooting does however, void your warranty. But things like Wifi tethering and overclocking, and even upgrading to Gingerbread become a lot easier.
The first step to rooting is knowing exactly what you are getting into. You don't want to blindly step into some crazy thing and have no idea what you just did to your phone. Personally, i read this post from Android Central- Here.
That post helped me greatly understand more about rooting.
Now to the actual process of rooting your V. The easiest way I found was to use Rom Tools. The thread to this program can be found - Here. In that thread it explains everything you need to get your phone rooted properly!
After that you must decide if you want to put a custom rom/kernal/mod onto your phone. I decided to put Bumblebee 2.4 onto my V and I love it!. Just search for it if you want it.
Hope this helped. Please reply with any other issues, questions, or concerns.
