Noob android question... what's "Rooting" and what are the benefits/downsides to doing it?

Rooting?

rooting is like what jailbreaking is to the iphone. it is something that is done so that you are not restricted to what the various phone carriers and manufacturers limits you to. for me it allows me to make the decision on what should or should not be on my phone. it is a way to increase performance and even battery life. you can even get updates sooner then they are officially released.
