rooting

Newbie
I have seen several threads where people mention rooting as something they would rather not have to do.

I am not a crazed gotta have the latest and greatest electronics type of guy so I am a bit behind the curve. I have had my Evo 4g since launch and about a year ago I got sick of the terrible battery life and rooted it.

Even though I do not keep up with the latest ROMS and kernels it really has made my phone an absolute joy to use. My lock screen is updated like newer phones, the battery life is fantastic, I was able to wifi tether and I was able to kill off unwanted crap.

I bet that all the missing features like screen recording and multi-screen will be made available by rooting at some point.

Why in the world would someone not want to root their phone?

Some don't root mainly because of security reasons for work others are afraid to do it and some just get the device and leave it as stock because it does what they want.

as for multiview, no need to root, Samsung will provide a update to get the features.

TS is there an article saying that Samsung will give updates for the multi view in the future? I've only rooted my phone once and it was my htc hd2 and I loved it but didn't do it myself my bro did it for me. After a while I encountered some trouble so decided I would leave mines stock so I don't mess anything up. I do agree rooted devices are endless possibilities! :)

I almost rooted my Note 2 last night then stopped myself. I realized the reasons I root are 2--boredom (usually around the 3 mo. mark of ownership) and habit.
I've rooted every phone from the Evo going forward. All my apps are paid apps and I felt I just had to have all those rooted apps on my phone. Now, not so much. The apps aren't going anywhere and if I ever feel the need to root this phone, they'll still be there for me to re-download.

Also, for some of the most basic uses/users, root isn't necessary. Root is not going to make my phone run any faster; thats what custom roms are for and for now, don't need those either.

I root mine for a few must have apps: Titanium Backup (don't want to loose my angry birds progress ;)), Orbot (for tor), stick mount (for usb drives), and Solid Explorer (R/W of the system partition). I normally am a ROM whore, but I think I may stick with stock for a little or only flash a slightly modded stock with debloat, zip align, Hotspot hack, init.d, etc.

guys - i'm here trying to learn about rooting... so thanks for the info! my son's nexus s 4g is slooowwww... i had it first, gave to him and wiped but its still laggy. from what i'm learning rooting followed by a custom rom would speed things up- is this correct?

It funny, the Note 1 was the first device since the HTC Hero that I did not root right off the bat. It took me about a good 2-4 months after getting it to finally root it. And I only rooted it to get Titanium backup to back up my apps. (And I still haven't mastered that app, so I don't know if I did it correctly lol)

Granted, I did replace the Touchwiz UI for Nova Launcher. With the Note 2, I just might not root it as quickly as I usually do either. At least not until I get the OTA update for multiview features that is missing currently.

I'm certainly not going to put cyanomod on it, since it has a habit of losing 4G and I am not going to have such a beast of a phone on 3G for ever, especially with the ongoing reports showing that NYC's LTE upgrades are processing quite nicely.

Yes and no. A custom ROM will usually be slightly snappier and some custom kernels will allow overclocking. It might be ~10% improvement, but nothing Earth shatter.

Awww, do you need me to make a tutorial for you??

I'm usually all about AOSP built ROMs, but I have to agree with you on this device. I think there is too much functionality built into the OEM ROM to warrant leaving it. I mean the real appeal of the Note 2 is the S pen and all of its features. You'll still have a powerhouse phone on AOSP, but you'll loose all of the great extra features that set this device apart from the competition.

thanks, not sure if i should bother then... i thought i'd hear less complaints from him following!

Actually, if you did it would be awesome. I know I can't be the only person not knowing what the hell they are doing. lol

!!!! YES !!!!

TB has so much going on which simply overwhelms my brain. More times than not I'm not sure as TS said, "did I do it right." And as I think of it, I don't think I did. I've never been able to install a backup I supposedly created without it being a major fail.

Now I don't know if this was a glitch of TB or not but one time all backups except one disappeared....completely vanished. The one remaining was so old it was easier to start from scratch.

I do feel you though on not loosing game progress.

Can't promise anything soon because my wife's birthday is coming, but I'll see what I can do.

There is an unofficial rule on AF and that is...

Keep the spouse/other half happy then keep the members happy. lol

:D

Birthday? Who told her to have a birthday? :D
See, it's going to be your own fault when people start asking for an ETA since you made the offer to do a tutorial!

LOL! That should be another rule; over a XDA it's official-- don't ask for ETA; you get it when you get it.
