Root Rules on deleting backups

So I've been doing a lot of jumping around with roms themes and kernels ... and have been fairly religious about backups, which brings up my little question.

Are there any rules on deleting them or renaming them? Are there any locations/files that keeping track of what's out there?

Just looking to free up some space ...

Delete what you dont want

also rename what you want. I rename mine with rom name/kernel name/date so I know which backup it is.
