Help Running out of internal memory

Hey, I'm new here but have a query/problem (I have searched the forum for this particular problem but need more help).
A few weeks ago I got the low on space icon. I deleted a few apps to get rid of it, however, it came back again. I left it this time and it was about 16 or so mb. I check again, and it has decreased to around 10mb. I wondered if it was to do with apps and automatically updating themselves, so I checked and I unticked the boxes which allowed for automatic updates. However, the memory keeps going down and I have not installed any new apps for some time now. Recently, I havent been able to play music or get on the internet due to lack of space, so I again deleted some things to make room. It made about 8mb available, but I check again a few days later and its gone down to 1.4mb.
Is it something to do with text messages? I have over 20,000 messages so could it be something to do with that?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks and sorry if I have posted this in the wrong board

Yes, text messages, emails, contact data, wallpaper settings... everything you do on your phone takes up space.

20,000? Wow. Sort that out.

Have you looked in settings, applications, manage applications? You can check the messaging app data size there

Fact is, the desire is very limited in this respect.

I would recommend looking at rooting to be honest. Otherwise start uninstalling stuff.

Yeah of course. Go to the "all things root" sub forum and read all the stickies. It's a lot of reading but it must be done

Is there no way to install apps exclusively on my 16GB mSD card? I am having this same problem and came to this forum looking for help.

No. All apps need have an element of the app on sd, unless you root... then you have more options

This is the problem my g/f had with her Desire, so I rooted it for her over the weekend and installed CM7.

The main advantage in rooting is that you can remove, or move some of the pre-installed apps onto your SD Card, thus freeing up internal storage. As mentioned in another post, with CM7 you can default all new apps to install directly onto the SD Card. Very handy.

Definitely read in FAQs section here. They may seem a bit daunting at first, but they answered all my questions, and solved a couple of problems I ran into whilst rooting.

Pre installed applications are on the system partition so you wouldn't gain any extra usable storage.
