Root RUU failed error 171 usb connection error

Hi guys,
Can anyone help me out here.
I'm trying to put my HTC Desire back to stock using an original RUU link found on this site.
My trouble is when it runs all works fine for about a minute then it says ERROR 171 - USB CONNECTION ERROR
please make sure the usb connection is ok.
My phone is definately connected to my laptop but I don't understand what the problem is.

I'm currently running MIUI XJ 1.9.9
Does anyone need any more info from my phone to help me with my problem.
Any help will be much appreciated.

Daft question: you are in fastboot USB mode when running the RUU? Since you aren't running a Sense ROM I think you need to do this.

Sorry to sound like an idiot but how do i know i'm in fastboot mode.
I know how to access the recovery mode and i can see fadtboot as an option but when i select it i can't see anything to do with usb.

Fastboot is the screen. It says fastboot on it. Unless, you plug in usb then it says fastboot usb

So I first need to enter fastboot option in recovery mode then run the RUU on my laptop ?

I've been running the RUU whilst my phone was on the home screen previously.
I'll try again when I get home from work while in fastboot screen.

Fastboot and recovery are both options on the bootloader (hboot) screen

However, back and power from off will go straight to fastboot in the same way vol down and power gets to hboot
