Root S-off evo user needs help

My phone is officially S-Off and Ive gotten down to this step

STEP 2: RECOVERY MODE
Hold down VOL DOWN + POWER until device boots into a White Screen.
Move to RECOVERY by using the VOL DOWN toggle and select by using POWER button.

And when I do that it goes to a orange triangle... I pull the battery and my phone goes back to normal. How do I get past this?? And if I'm not gonna use custom roms/kernals do I NEED to do the device recovery step? All I want to do is delete the bloatware and use tethering.

thanks!

1) You rooted with unrevoked, and it was successful, correct?
1) You can get to hboot (the white screen), just not recovery, right? And you verified there that it does indeed say s-off?
2) Are you able to boot up the phone fully, to android, like normal?
3) If so, install a terminal emulator from the market, open it and type "su" without quotes, then enter. Verify the prompt changes from $ to #, and that you get no permission denied errors.
4) If yes to the above, you are fully rooted, but your recovery got messed up somehow.
5) Assuming the above is true, install ROM manager from the market. When you open that, you have the option to flash recovery. Choose either Clockwork 2.6 or RA 2.2.1 (which will be under alternate recovery).
6) If you cannot boot into android, but do have s-off, download this:

http://db.tt/PEhJy41

and make sure it stays named PC36IMG.zip. Copy it to the root of your sdcard, and boot back into hboot, where you will be prompted to flash the zip. It will give you RA 2.2.1. From there, you'd have to flash a ROM. I'm guess this is not the case, though, correct?

Thanks for the quick reply....\
1) yes
2)yes, I've double check I am S OFF
3)It says permission denied

3 is definitely the problem huh?

Do you have the superuser app? Install it if you don't have it. If that still isn't working for you, you can either:

1) rerun unrevoked, which should give you back clockwork and root your rom. It might give you errors when it tries to flash unrevoked-forever for s-off, but it's already done, so it doesn't matter.

or

2) Rather than attempting the ROM manager method, flash that PC36IMG.zip from hboot. That will give you a recovery image, where you can flash a custom rooted ROM of your choice. I'm thinking rerunning unrevoked will probably get you where you need to be, so try that first.

I reran unrevoked and I typed in SU to that app and some superuser permission thing happened and it changed to #... so now should I go back to where I was getting stuck on and try again?

thanks for all your help man

Sounds like you are rooted my friend!!!

You do need to find out if you have a recovery image. Just download Rom Manager and it will tell you your current recovery image. If there is not one listed, then just copy one from Rom Manager....your choice Clockworkmod or Amon(which will be under the "alternate recovery" heading).

I use clockwork just because that is what I cut my teeth on and it is familiar to me. Most people would recommend Amon RA because it appears to wipe Dalvik cache more thoroughly and I think it backs up your wimax keys....although I think the newest Cmod does too. Bomb, check my work here so I don't give this guy bad info.

I went back to the step my phone would get an error at... And I successfully backed it up. I checked my 4g (I live in Vegas) and it works... So do I have to do anything w. my 4g keys?

And I want to use wireless tethering, titanium backup and things like that so what rom/kernal would you suggest?

You can use those apps while on a stock rooted ROM. ROMs and kernels are personal preference.....whatever you like and what works best for you. I am a Myn's user.

As far as 4g, nope...if it works then everything is dandy ref 4g!!!

So you are sure you have a recovery image/method?

o ok. I tried using the wireless tether and those apps but I wasn't "fully" rooted last time so I didn't know that they worked on stock.

Going to myns is a big urge but I love how it is stock so I'm not 100% yet... Is there a way to get titanium backup pro free? ( as in 4shared? ) Does the free version do the job or no??

I don't know of a way. And the mods frown upon trying to bootleg paid apps....just FYI.

The free version does the job...just not as well. There is no "batch" option so you end up have to restore your apps one by one....that is not fun. If you are gonna play around in this rooting stuff it is well worth the 5 bucks. There is nothing like hitting the batch restore and havinf your phone back exactly like it was before. Okay, not exactly but almost. It will not backup any theming you do....you will have to reflash all of your themes and addons.

Robtheknob7, you are indeed rooted now :). Sounds like flyjbaker got everything covered for you. One thing, though, ROM manager has a tendency to get confused about whether or not you have recovery flashed or not, even when you do. It's usually only on a first run. So, go ahead and do what you were doing before. Boot into hboot, then select recovery. If ROM manager does say you don't have a recovery, and you do, just tell it to reflash CW. There's no harm in it. Just make sure you have CW 2.6, not 3.0.x.x. Oh, and CW now backs up your wimax keys just like RA.

Bomb, check my work here so I don't give this guy bad info.

LOL, is this going to be a thing now? :p

i am having a slightly different issue but similar. i tried using a auto root from xda (2.0) and it hung in recovery... so now my phone will not boot (stuck in white htc evo 4g screen) but i can get into the boot loader and recovery. problem is that it wont take any of the pc36img files or any update files... very frustrating... i took it to a local guy who said he could fix it and he could not find an ota that worked. hardware version is 3 and it had 3.70.65 before this mess began

ive even tried wiping the cache and partition to no avail... i keep getting signature verification failed installation aborted.

I believe all the info you need is in the thread for this. Does this sound like what happened?

"After a moment your phone should show a Red Triangle with an Exclamation mark inside, at this point the script will take back over and start to make a NANDroid backup. If it hangs at the White htc EVO 4G screen for more than two or three minutes you will have to pull the battery and flash the PC36IMG file again. If it still hangs the second time around then you will have to flash the RUU and start over."

The RUU (It's actually a PC36IMG) is supplied in that thread. Is that what you tried to flash?

No matter what, I'm sure we can get it up and running. Make sure you don't have s-off yet (which you shouldn't) and flash this from hboot:

MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service

Rename it to PC36IMG.zip, first, and copy it to the root of your sdcard. Reboot into hboot, and it will prompt you to flash it.

thanks for the quick reply ! i tried it but hboot says no image or wrong image ! crazy
i would gladly send someone a few bucks if they could find a solution for me ! im a college student and dont have much but im not expecting the world for free. thanks in advance

Are you sure you renamed it right? A lot of people accidentally rename them to PC36IMG.zip.zip (windows hides extensions by default).

i just removed the ".zip" since i can already see from the icon that its a zip file and tried with no luck same thing...

There has to be either something wrong with the name of the file or the location. It has to be exactly /sdcard/PC36IMG.zip. Anything else will result in it not find any file to flash.

my hboot version is 2.10.0001. and yup its the only thing on the sd card no folders no file in a folder just the pc36img.zip

Does it ever prompt you to flash a pc36img (ie does it even find it) or does it just load hboot normally?

I think you're thinking of recovery :). This is hboot.

is there any way i can use an update.zip file to recover ? have you ever heard of a phone being this stubborn ? i called a guy from craigslist who charges for root service. went to see him and he could not get any image or update to take. one was able to take but was missing files and aborted anyway. he basically told me he did not have the right image file or update file. what do you think ?
