Root S-off idea.... No wire trick

Possible idea for evo v s-off without wire trick

1: srs root to gain a temp root shell
2: set mainver low and I've read Cid can be changed to 0001 for sprint(I think)
3: downgrade hboot to 1.40 with closeone's live cd
4: 1.13 sprint ruu
5: revolutionary
6: profit

.... Just thinking.

Anyone have thoughts on it? This is really just a theory since mine is the 3d so i can't test it...

First let me say I like the way you think outside the box

The cid you'll need is either sprint cid(SPCS_001),or supercid(11111111). The prollem is that with the s3 processor mmcblk0p4 and 0p5 are write protected,i don't think its possible to change cid until you are s off. I spent some time trying to change cid on a rezound,as if you can get supercid, then its possible "facepalm" s-off will work on it,eliminating need for brick downgrade or revolutionary.

That aside,I *think* your steps would work,if you could change cid. My only criticism is that IMO the wire trick is less scary than the brick downgrade,as long as you have a phone that cooperates for unlock ;)

Having used jp bear on windows and ubuntu,I must say it seems to go a lil smoother from linux... FWTW :)

Thanks, I don't like HTC Dev much since it didn't work for me. Plus I don't really like the idea of physically shorting anything on the phone and it doesn't hurt to have an alternative. Too bad though if what you say is true this won't be it.

I like the way both of you think. However, I think it's a bit more risky. The wire trick helps because it's less risky. The process should be done on Linux or Ubuntu because it's more stable. Linux ftw. Also, bricking the device during s-off would probably be a disaster for the noobs that can't do anything that try this. (so far no one's like that yet :D).

the way i understand it,the wire trick is not a short circuit. it is simply completing a circuit, much like flipping on a light switch, wich will result in the processor being put into download mode.

i dont blame you one bit for having a bad taste from htcdev, after all you went thru  that scenario is not typical,however... ive unlocked more phones more times than i can count, lol. only prollem i ever had was when trying to unlock a one xl with a modified misc image. and after i swapped that for stock,it went fine.

i tend to agree SuperAfnan that for the average user the wire trick is much safer than the brick downgrade. you obviously have a good understanding of how things work, and are definately what id consider more of an advanced user, even if youre just getting into it. it was easy for you, even using the linux tools instead of the automated live cd,but even the live cd is still what id consider a pretty advanced hack. matter of fact, its one that ive never done, and there arent many of those, lol ;)
