Root S Off Issue

So i got my wifes phone rooted and as going through the soff process on the exact same computer I used successfully for mine the other day. Been doing the wire trick a few hours now but has never worked. Tried the unlimited IO Irc but they can't help because they don't support 64 bit windows 7 since it is not supposed to work on there (even though it did a couple of days ago). Anyway, any way for me to get out of the s off process and she still be rooted and unlocked but s on at this point or is the only option running the RUU? And I am guessing there is no way that the computer is 32 bit even though when I open system it says 64? Totally not getting why it worked 2 days ago and not today.

Actually managed to get back to unlocked s on on Jmz stock. Guess I will flash her a rom that works s on for now. Just glad I got out of S Off wire trick jail I had been trapped in for awhile.

Took me couple hours and many wires(it was the wires more than the timing that was important) to get the wire trick to work

I tried using the same paper clip I did the other day on mine but had to punt after a couple of hours. Getting her onto mobster hd lite for now.

What size micro SD card were you using? Sometimes using a smaller card can make the wire trick easier.

Very bizarre how all the same stuff can have such divergent results. Went to the irc for unlimited io but was pretty much told to get a real operating system and to quit wasting their time. I tried to explain that the same gear had successfully done it twice before but was told they would not help because the system is 64 bit.

I know they get tired of people not reading how to do things etc but I had done it twice already and was looking for help on why this time was not working was all. Didn't keep the transcript but definitely had not needed the f bomb dropped at me.

I totally assume it was user error by me. Just can't come up with what I did differently this time.

Has also been one of those days where all the electronics in the house go nuts. Internet is crazy slow, x box kept wiggin out etc.

While the Unlimited IO crew can definitely be "curt" at times their advice when offered is always spot on. As for your issue, without the errors, if any that were returned it's impossible to offer any suggestions. It could be something as simple as forgetting to run jbear as administrator or so many other simple, easy to overlook items. When you're ready to try again just let us know and we'll do our best to help you out. :p

I have no doubt about their advice and like I said I am sure it was user error in there somewhere with what I was doing.
As for trying again that is up to the wife letting me :-)

I recommend running a metronome app on another device to get your timing right. I got this suggestion from another Forum go-er and it seems to have worked for me.

Also, I decided to run Ubuntu off a Live CD (more like Live DVD as I don't have any 753mb CDs). I have XP, and while it may work, it' not supported.

Everything ran flawlessly from what I can tell, took all of 2 minutes to get the wire trick to happen, and it was over before I knew it. This probably mimicks your initial experience with this S-OFF trick. I can't fathom why you were successful with 64 bit in the past and not this time around.

In situations like this, I find it much more productive to follow the supported OFFICIAL instructions rather than trying to figure out how to make "my way" work.

I'd advise you look into the Ubuntu Live CD option as a way of saving time. The download was the longest part of the whole thing. The Ubuntu D/L server crawled for me that night I did it.

Ubuntu looks interesting as a system to me. If I did the Windows installer would I then just choose in Windows boot manager each time which to use? Or is it better to just use the disk option? Having never used it it looked like an os I might like.

If you use the live CD to boot Ubuntu it won't touch your current PC configuration. I believe the unlimited.io site has a link to that or it can be easily found via Google.

If you do the Ubuntu Windows Install, and you don't already have a spare partition on your HD, you're going to wipe out Windows when you partition your HD. Don't do this unless you want to install Windows.

Go the LiveCD route, and everything will run in RAM. I believe the download for LiveCD is the same as the installation package. It's the same 753mb file IIRC. Then just use an ISO burner to put it on a DVD, and that's it.

Super Easy.

EDIT:

If you want to use Ubuntu for things other than JBear, then yes, you'll want it to reside on a HD, not a DVD. Either look to buy a new HD, or partition your current HD to run both Windows and Ubuntu. I can't offer any info about this as I haven't done it myself. I don't know what mechanism you'd use to switch between them, but you're probably right about the Windows Boot Manager.

Would it work of an external hard drive?

If your BIOS can boot from USB, then perhaps...

EDIT:

Your speeds may be compromised though going through USB. You're best bet for running Ubuntu off a HD is a dedicated HD or partition inside the box with SATA or similar high speed conenction.

The external HD would likely be better than running it off the DVD directly as you would have more RAM available that way, and it's a permanent environment unlike running it off the DVD in which case, all customizations are lost every time you reboot.

So the portable HD is a compromise between internal HD and LiveCD assuming your BIOS works OK with it.

I have mine setup so that Win7/XP are separate partitions on my raid and I just choose the os from the boot manager, my Ubuntu runs on a separate 120 Gb drive with a swap partition, to boot into it I just change the boot drive priority in my bios. :p

You can also run any Linux live distro off a thumb drive using tools such as Universal usb installer and Unetbootin.

It loads much, much faster compared to booting from cd.
