Root S-ON/OFF question.

I will be getting my evo soon however I don't have a spare cable around to do the s-on trick or I would do it as soon as I unbox the phone. (I see mixed opinions about using a paper clip so I'm kinda scared to use that....) I'm gonna have to stay S-ON for a bit starting off for a little while.

With 4EXT, can I go into the sprint's XDA CDMA HTC Evo 3D section and flash whatever rom? Or do I have to stick with the roms that specifically say virgin mobile? I would really like to slap MIUI within minutes of opening it

I am not 100% certain. Until you flash a new bootloader, you're limited to ROMs that can boot from 1.57. I don't know if there is anyway to change the bootloader with S-ON using fastboot and SDK-Tools.

One of the Guides will set you straight.

Yeah the guides don't really go into depth about that. A lot of roms don't state what Hboot you need. I should probably stop reading into things so much until my phone gets here lol.

A paperclip will work fine for S-OFF. Just make sure it's rubber coated or that you wrap electrical tape around the part where you intend to have it in your hands. It's easy to do, and not worth worrying about or stressing about. A big to-do is made over it for nothing, really.

With 4ext, you can install anything that is compatible with your phone. Once you S-OFF, you can essentially make your phone think it's an EVO 3D. At that point yes, you may flash any rom from XDA's CDMA Evo 3D section. There are also some great roms here for you to try out. Development and support for this phone is excellent.

I failed repeatedly using a wire. Finally switched to a paperclip and got it first try. My wire was very thin and delicate and i dont think it was good enough for the wire trick. That being said, the paperclip worked perfectly.

When flashing EVO 3D ROMs, does anything need fixing? MMS, SMS, radio this, radio that? I have the latest OTA VM radio stuff and Jbear 1.50...is there anything I need to do after flashing an EVO 3D ROM?

I put off S-off for so long because I was nervous to do it too, and it turns out that it was the easiest thing to do. I've done it twice, both times with a regular paper clip from my office, with regular scotch tape wrapped around it, and I've had no problems.

Here's the paper clip that I've used for two phones. ;)
