Help S2 i9100p crashing + battery issues

Hi guys,

At the beginning of this year, I flashed the phone from vr 3.0 to ics:-

Rom: ICS
And' ver: 4.1.2
Baseband: i9100XXLS6
Kernel: 3.0.31-462349 se.infra@sep-111 #3 SMP PREEMPT Tue Nov 6 02:42:23 KST 2012
Build No: JSO54K.I9100XXLSJ

It ran okay, although now and again the phone would freeze for a couple of seconds, but then continue working fine. But over the last month it has developed the following problems:-

1. Freezes and reboots on a regular basis
2. On many occasions after reboot, battery goes from a good 90% to suddenly 10-20%
3. Even with a different battery from a friend's s2, the phone still does freeze/lock.

I have ordered a brand new battery from orange, but whilst i'm waiting for that to arrive, i would like to reflash to whatever you can recommend. I want to preferably go back to the latest orange brand fw and see if that resolves the problem.

Could you please clarify the following for me?:-

1. How do i fully backup everything (excluding rom!!) and how do i restore it?
2. Is the latest Orange FW Version 4.0.3 which was released on jan 2013?
3. Once reflashed, how do i root it too?

Hello s2android.

I think I ought to point out that you are in fact on the leaked Jelly Bean stock firmware, LSJ, for the GT-i9100 and not the, GT-i9100P, variant with NFC.

whilst i'm waiting for that to arrive, i would like to reflash to whatever you can recommend. I want to preferably go back to the latest orange brand fw and see if that resolves the problem.

Latest Orange release for the GT-i9100P is ICS, Android 4.0.3, I9100PBVLPE_I9100PORALPE_ORA.

You cannot do a full mirror image backup, a nandroid, unless you are rooted. The best you can hope for on an unrooted phone, apart from sync'ing with your Google account is something like My Backup/Pro from the Play Store.

Thank you very much ironass for your help. I actually don't want to do a full backup...i simply want to backup:-

1. photos/videos
2. all incoming/outgoing texts
3. contacts
5. whatsapp

Shall i simply connect phone to pc and just backup all the folders from the phone memory and then restore them later?

You cannot access SMS unless you are rooted or use an app like My Backup. I do not know about Whatsapp messages but guess it might save those. Contacts can be exported to your SD card and copied to your computer as can Music and Photos/Videos.

First of all, I would like to say thanks for all the help and advice. I really appreciate it.

After flashing the orange stock rom, I found that the phone was still freezing, rebooting and battery losing it's charge. I have now got a new battery for it and that has resolved these issues which i'm very happy about.

Unfortunately, the phone is still jerky and even my new budget ZTE Blade III seems to be more faster/smoother than the S2!!

I have tried numerous roms and they all seem to be jerky.

I want to know the following please:-

1. Could it be a ram/cpu issue?
2. What rom would you say puts the least pressure on ram/cpu? Can you recommend one?
3. How do i put on the recommended rom? Odin or a different method?

No... it is more likely to be a problem with the update process itself, as described, here, unless you did a vanilla install.

It is the user, usage and their app's that, "put pressure", on the RAM & CPU.

I would recommend the latest NEAT ROM LSS as this is very stable and battery friendly. This comes in the form of a .zip file that is flashed in Recovery mode for rooted phones.

The only problem is that my phone isn't rooted, so can i used odin to install the rom? Also I think I've read that the lag can be caused by a crappy kernel. What the Neatrom Kernel: XWLSS-v5.00.4-PhilZ like?

You will need to be rooted to flash a .zip file ROM. PhilZ kernel is basically a stock kernel with enhanced CWM recovery. Very good nonetheless.

If you do not wish to root, then you are stuck with the stock JB firmware kernel. This is very good and is not the cause of your problem as I mentioned earlier.

I have a couple of questions:-

1. How do i root it or how do i install the neatrom whilst on the orange stock rom?

2. On the neatrom webpage, there are links to XWLSS_NeatROM_Lite_v4.7 and v4.7_RemovedApps, so which one do i need?

I already posted the guide to rooting in post #8. :confused:

NEAT ROM will replace the stock Orange firmware completely.

The FULL version includes everything the stock firmware does. The LITE version has a lot of app's and bloatware removed. However, you may use some of those app's, so start with the full version to begin with. For details of removed app's, download file, here. Installation instructions, here, after you are rooted.

Personally, I would go for a vanilla install as shown in the, "Firmware update problems... what you can do!", thread as I think it is your app's and settings that are causing your problems rather than the firmware itself. The only way to be sure is to wipe internal & external memories and factory reset your phone prior to flashing a ROM or firmware. The choice is yours!
 
Mate that link doesn't work. What is a vanilla install and how do i do an absolute clean-wipe and then install neat rom lite?

PS: I've now rooted the phone and double-checked that it is rooted using root-checker basic :)
 
Try it again. Vanilla install explained in detail. Full wipe of memories and Factory reset.
 
yup, just done the full wipe of both internal and ext memory and then a factory wipe. There is a massive difference, although the orange stock fw is still kinda slow!

My only option now is to install the neatrom fw. One thing i would like to know. What is the difference between this wiping method and the davik cache wipe?

EDIT: On second thoughts, it's much much smoother now! :) That means the reason for the slowdown is due to me filling the internal memory with loads of apps??? If thats true, how can i tell Google Play to ALWAYS install apps on sd card?
 
Why on earth would you need to re-name it?

Which instruction told you to do that?

sorry about that....ignore the rename stuff mate....i was getting confused with some other guide.

I've now installed Neatrom and boy that is fast! The strange thing though is that the orange stock firmware.zip was 431mb and the Neatrom.zip is 500mb, but isn't the neatrom supposed to use less memory and less storage space compared to many roms? if so, why is it so big?
 
Right mate, just to update you, i've totally filled my external sd card with data to the max and the phone is still very fast. Could you pls tell me how i can change the default location for apps to sd card?
 
Hello again!

I've installed the usual stuff such as outlook, tango, skype, bbc news etc and everything is running absolutely smooth now and I'm extremely happy with this rom - THANK YOU IRONASS! :)

Couple of things though:-

1. Since this is a custom rom, where are all those extra custom options you tend to get that allow you to tweak it?

2. Is there a way of moving not all, but at least some stuff onto the sd card? For example how do i get the camera to store any photos automatically onto the ext sdcard?
 
I have same problem with the phone. I reffer to the battery. I sought that my phone freeze when i charge it with usb cable or in the car. If i chage with wall charger i have no problem. But i think battery is draining to fast. About 13h with wifi on over night.

Must i change the battery?
