Help S3 screen problem

My sisters s3 screen brightness randomly became very dark, after rebooting a couple of times the screen would be completely black unless you pushed the home button which caused the screen to flicker on for half a second. I could access the recovery menu normally for awhile but now even that doesn't work. Changing the battery made no difference. Does anyone know how I could try to fix this? Cheers
 
Since it's doing it in recovery it sounds like a hardware fault (not software) so nothing we can really help with sorry.
It's probably out of warranty (when did she buy it?) so it's down to her if it's worth paying to get fixed (probably not)

Maybe someone has a better suggestion but since recovery isn't part of the firmware it really does sound like a damaged screen or the chip controlling it.
Hopefully I'm wrong.
