Help S3 Shutting down on it's own

The past few days I've noticed my phone shutting down on it's own a few times, I've had to remove the battery to get it back on.

It happened again today though when I plugged a charger in it turns out it was still on and the screen came on.

Has this happened to anyone else? Or does anyone know a possible cause / solution?

Thanks

Same thing was happening to me, Till it eventually just died. Mines been fixed by samsung and should be back soon, Hopefully it wont happen to you too. Seems like a new common problem, Have seen posts about it quite a bit recently..

This happened to me this week. Started turning itself on and off and then today i went to check the time and its just completely dead and wont turn back on or connect to the laptop. How did you go about getting it fixed by samsung?

There are some known issues. One is "black crush" which I'm assuming is a Black screen, not waking up which I also assume is what the op has.

Another is SDS or "sudden death syndrome" which is triggered by faulty firmware on the VTU00M emmc with 0xf1 firmware version (international 16GB version only)... symptoms of this are that the phone just dies, never to awake again. It needs motherboard replacement by samsung (or carrier if its on contract).

For more info on the latter, read my thread here:

These are about preventative measures though.

It can't boot into any mode so there's no way to confirm custom.

However I prefer to use an ics sboot (bootloader) to keep the flash counter at 0 for other reasons. Just means download mode is unsafe

Thanks for all the replies, they were very informative.

I'm going to do a factory reset, in case it could possibly be a faulty app. I will update once I've tried this.

EDIT: So I was going to do a factory reset but every time i now start up the phone it freezes on the homes screen or soon after...

Id send it into samsung mate.. Send them an email and they should ask for your address, Then the next day you should receive a parcel for you to send your phone in for a repair.

If its a branded handset, I'd recommend going to your carrier first. You can drop it and collect it in store too. The good thing is, the carrier can keep track of your issues this way so if you have several issues, they may just be able to give you a new phone. If you always go direct to samsung, they cant do that.

Obviously if its unbranded, you'd have to go to Samsung.

Thanks for the advice, I think I'll be bringing it back to Phones4U to see what they say.

I finally got my phone backed up and factory reset, I thought the problem was fixed, I had a few apps installed and no freezes but then it happened again. It still seems to be freezing, just not so often now.

I'm going to uninstall all apps I am unsure about before calling in to Phones4U.
