S5 fails to excite

Exactly, somehow the light can measure your heart beat. I know this app.

The pulse in the blood flow causes variations in brightness, that's what it detects. The Casio HRM watches work in exactly the same way. So it should work with any smart-phone that has a camera and LED flash.

I prefer blood pressure measurement. Some of you can hope for a glucose checker.

Don't think you can do that optically. AFAIK it usually involves taking a blood sample and putting it on a slide or stick of some sort. Not sure how accurately you can measure blood pressure though, not without the usual inflated cuff. Any blood pressure monitors I've seen always have a cuff that inflates.

This has got me thinking if I were to buy a flagship Samsung, I might as well get the S4 rather than the S5. The S4 is very likely to be reduced in price when the S5 is released. Especially given the apparent reduced storage availability in the S5 compared to previous S series flagships. And that the heart rate monitor is a free app you can just install.

In fact if you shop around now you can pick up an s4 for around half what the s5 will cost.

I think this device has a huge chance to under perform in sales. The S4 jump to S5 is not very big compared to the S3 to S4. I can see a LOT (millions) of S4 owners staying with their S4s and the main upgraders being S3 owners.

Pricing for this device will be be very sensitive.

I own the S4 and Note 2014, so not a troll.

I think it will sell like gangbusters actually. Most sales of smartphones are on contract, so it would be the S3 owners who would be eligible. Not to mention all the other Android brand owners eligible for an upgrade. I would bet that the folks who upgrade their phone every year make up a very small percentage of overall buyers, and therefor of these potential sales.

Pricing will probably be exactly around the price it has always been, $199 on contact - more for 32GB I bet

Under performing isn't a failure ;) Keep in mind the S4 did not sell as expected and was a huge jump from the S3.

I think an important thing to remember not only here, but in general, is that we are enthusiasts. I don't think Samsung in aiming this upgrade at S4 users, most of those folks are probably under contract for another year. They are after the S3 users whos 2 year contracts are up. S4-->S5=meh, S3-->S5=ooh. At least for folks looking something new and exciting after rocking the S3 for 2 years.

QFT.

Most regular users don't care how many cores their handset has, the screen resolution or what mAh the battery is etc.

They're looking for something better than they currently have and if you're coming to the end of a 2 year contract, the SGS5 is going to wipe the floor with whatever you're getting rid of.

S3 was huge sales success for Samsung, selling about 50 millions. S4 received almost similar level of negative responses when revealed but they still managed to sell 40 millions last year.

I'm not so interested how well S5 would sell. Guess it will be do 30M at least or maybe close to S4 number. I think it will be hard to beat S3 record again even for Samsung. Smart-phones have matured so much, so it will be hard for any single device to make huge numbers like that again except iPhone.

That, I guess, is why it was a lower key launch. Last year Samsung predicted that the rise in sales they'd had with the S3 would continue with the S4. It didn't. Most other companies would have been over the moon with the S4's sales, but because the expectation had been higher, and shares priced on that basis, it hurt them. So they need to hype the phone without hyping expectations this time.

I think a lot of S3 owners will upgrade, so split the number at 35 million. Maybe 40.

Only a matter of time when cell phones reach a certain limit, I think we are almost there...

Nowhere near, loads of room for improvement in many different areas.

But it may be getting to the point where the average user with no technical knowledge may believe that.

Doubt that. The two big things that come to mind would be:

Battery technology has a long way to go. Also the processor will only continue to get faster & more importantly, more efficient.

As long as there is money in advancement, change will occur.

There will always be haters. Not sure what they expect...it's a phone! If you want some serious computing power then get a laptop! Gheez...

Seriously....what do you expect? What do you want? If people are so disappointed with the latest releases from Samsung, then you have 2 options:

1-Go to a different phone.

2-Go work for Samsung and you come up with what you think is acceptable.

You will never be able to satisfy everyone. Someone will always have something to say.

I still have my S2 and will be upgrading to the new S5.

Now that I've had time to read a large number of articles about the S5, I'm quite impressed. Not every new version will contain earth shattering improvements, it just doesn't work out that way.

Those who whine about too many so called gimmicky OEM apps, are quick to dismiss them without even trying them first hand. Taking the time to learn your new Android phone and all it's features pays off handsomely, at least that's my experience. :)

What hate? The general concensus by the folks that upgrade every year is the the S4 is good enough to not warrant spending the money this time to the S5. Samsung made a great device with the S4. Simple as that.

Added:

The hate might be when users try to move apps with the 16 model and discover the option is no longer there, thanks to the storage agreement with Google. That might foster some hateful feelings. Samsung loves them some bloat. This time the bloat is being marketed as free stuff for customers. Previews stated less than 8gb free.

Yeh, If you're coming from an S2 to an S5, that's quite an upgrade. I should imagine the prospect is quite exciting. :) Got an S4 on the other hand or other recent top-end phone, it's likely not so exciting. Samsung have improved the specs a bit(except for storage) over the previous generation and added a feature or two, which is what I'd expect

Thinking about that, some Gameloft and EA games are >3GB now....hmmm. Can't move apps to SD unless you root apparently, and if you root a Samsung KNOX phone, that's warranty void.

That a good thing apps are getting that large. Those games are generally better

Also they are quick to dismiss many apps, features in TW can be turned off, disabled or replaced with others if they wish.

I don't know why there is still complaints on S5 storage space. It's been some days since the reports of more free space in S5. Multiple sources say TW is toned down a bit in S5. I know 16Gb version won't cut it for some of us consuming medias heavily anyway but for most others it should be fine.
