Help S5 to PC Connection Problem

I did not suggest you disable permissions. I suggested you disable security settings and encryption.

I will definitely try that when I have some time to play with it.

In the meantime, I noticed something interesting when connecting the phone to my friend

Having being stumped by this problem from yesterday, and scouring through various solutions, I finally solved it and thought I would post my solution.

To summarise my issues, I had just moved from an S4. No problems with S4 and PC connection. But on S5, the USB icon doesn't even appear.

Installed drivers, different modes etc, different computers, cables, ports, all to no avail. But S4 works fine!

The issue is the USB setting on the phone. Taking a cue from the discussion on the Note 3, here's what I did.

Open the Dial screen and enter the USSD code *#8080#

That will reveal the USB screen. At the top, there are to options with radio buttons. CP and AP. If AP is selected, there will be a further list of items.

You want to select "MTP + ADB" (or just "MTP"). Click "ok" to exit, and MTP/PTP mode is now enabled.

Simplez.

Problem Solved!

I am glad you got it figured out. :) And this was a lesson for me as well.

I know very well that when one is troubleshooting a WiFi problem, the very first step is to completely disable whatever encryption/security measures may be in place (since security measures are often the CAUSE of WiFi problems), amd make sure the WiFi connection is solid. Only then work into the encryption/security measures.

I am sorry I did not think to apply that reasoning with your USB connection issue. I should have (and will from now forward) made mention of disabling any possible security measures in place on one's PC when diagnosing such a problem. Windows 'permissions' issues are often the first cause of something not working intuitively. After all, when it comes down to fine detail, WiFi and USB are simply alternate methods of gaining access to files, so troubleshooting either method would employ the same basic steps.

I have been going through this thread for the past week. I have been having the exact same issue. I have tried to look for pmokover's solution he has achieved, but all I see is a post of him saying he's achieved it! I then read your post Zoandroid and tried disabling my firewall. As silly as it sounds, it "kind of" is working for me. I can now transfer files without the constant disconnecting and reconnecting, but while that is happening if I browse the web at the same time, the chaos persists! The firewall blockage makes sense, but not being able to multi task doesnt! Also, in reference to below:

pmkover and Zoandroid, please, please save me............ I just got a galaxy s5, and after Samsung support gave up and told me to exchange my device, I waited 3 hours at bestbuy and did so, and the problem persists... any input on what you actually did to solve the problem will go such a long way...

Thanks

Hi Mike,

You won't see a USB icon in the Windows system tray when you connect the S5. Apparently this switch away from USB Mass Storage to MTP does away with that. So you also won't be able to "safely disconnect" the S5. So what I do is just wait a few minutes after the "Copying Files" dialog closes to make sure it is done copying whatever files I had been copying. Then since I use USB3 I switch the S5 back to USB2, which is probably an unnecessary step, but it is an added assurance that it isn't active on the USB connection. Then unplug the S5 from the USB port.

There are a couple things I have seen, WHILE the S5 is connected and I am accessing its files on my PC, that will screw things up. Like renaming a file or folder directly on the S5 instead of from the Windows interface, then trying to refresh the view from Windows. It doesn't like that and often needs to be disconnected and start over. I've not seen the issue on my S5, but with my S3 there were certain files in its SD card's "android" and "Evernote" folder that had crazy long path names. If I tried to copy those folders the entire copy process would fail and I would have to disconnect and start over. It would copy perhaps a dozen folders and then just stop, as if it thought it was done.

I copy about 10GB of files to my Win7 PC from the S5 using USB3 every weekend, and it works just fine.

As I recall, pmkover's final solution was that the problem lie in certain rather strict security measures and/or software he regularly uses on all his PCs. That was why his S5 connected fine to his friend's PC, but not to his own. Disabling those measures allowed it to work. So you might want to look into any security/permission settings you have set, especially if they are aggressive. Something that just sprang to mind......are you logged onto your PC as an administrator? If not, doing that might help.

P.S. - regarding Windows Firewall...... If you have ever experienced the 22 second DELAY when your mouse cursor passes over the Send To in a right-click selection in Windows Explorer (frustrates me to no end)........THAT is Windows Firewall in action. If you happen to turn off the firewall of both the sending and receiving PCs and try it again, there is no delay at all. Windows Firewall can be a pain, so I am not surprised to read that disabling it helped here. IMO, Microsoft doesn't seem to know how to do anything quickly or efficiently.

I am logged in as an administrator, and I don't use any anti virus software. only windows firewall. so while disabling it allows me to transfer files, I still have the problem of not being able to multi task while transferring files. it seems like once i go to do something else during the transfer, my galaxy screams at me and runs away... i left 50gb of music transferring over night and didn't have a problem.. of course there was no multi tasking going on during this transfer.

My goal is to be able to have my firewall on and permit what needs to be permitted in order to transfer. Do you know what I need to allow?

also lokyc, that didn't work either. i appreciate the help from both of you. thanks

Mike

You can set your default to the SD card for photos with the phone. Alsso, by the end of "14" or the beginning of "15" your KK 4.4.4 will become Lollipop 5.0.

This change will restore the transfer ability to send internal storage to the SD card as it was prior to the KKK 4.4.4 update. You will also be able to write to the card.

Anyway, after you plug in your cable, disregard all the carrier's or manuf's popups in the upper right and select open/view files. You should see both the phone and the card. If not try clicking on This PC and opening your phone there.

When you click on Verizon or Samsung or whatever you have, that is when you get involved with drivers and installations.

Have you tried going wireless from the store with WebSharing Lite?

just did, it didn't work, gives me an error when i try to transfer files, but i still want to correct the issue i'm having. it makes no sense that i bought a brand new phone, one very much talked about and hyped up, and am having ridiculous issues doing something so basic..

also another update right now, i have my s5 plugged into my pc and it is connecting and disconnecting uncontrollably... firewall off.... what is wrong???????

Sorry for taking so long to reply.

The security issues I had to deal with to resolve my problem had NOTHING to do with a firewall. They pertained to permissions to access various folders in my PCs. Specifically, granting access to various folders including the folder where the Samsung software resides. Originally, all of that was locked down (by intent). I had to open up access to certain folders a bit. In very simple terms, my permissions had originally been set to deny the S5 access to some folders it needs access to. Once I granted those permissions the problem disappeared for me.

Also, I did not have to change anything in the S5 (USB settings or anything else) to resolve the problem.

Peter

Could you please tell us what you did in case we need to do so also.
As I said in my last message, I made some of the folder permissions on my PCs less restrictive. "Permissions" pertains to which users of your PC (local or network) have access to individual folders. To see your current settings, in Windows Explorer right-click a particular folder. A menu will open. Then click Properties. Then look at both the Security and Sharing tabs. If you're not already familiar with this I suggest learning a bit about it before you play with settings.

The reason Permissions was an issue for me is that I run my PCs fairly locked-down. A little too locked down for the S5. Once I made some folders less locked down the problem disappeared for me.

Peter

I am sorry as I misunderstood. I thought the permissions was in the phone not the pc. I will leave mine as is as I am not experiencing any issues, at this time.

So I have seen this happen before with other Android phones as well. I have managed to get the devices working with the computer. Win7

First connect the phone to the computer.

Go to device manager from control panel.
Locate the driver for the phone and uninstall the driver
Next right click on the computer or select the action button at the top and scan for hardware.
If the driver fails again, try another cable and repeat.
Will take some time for the drivers to fully install but that should fix it.

Seems like during the first install the driver failed and stopped them from reinstalling correctly

Brilliant, this worked perfectly for me when I used the new code *#0808#. Thanks.

Hi all, i solved it on my win 8.1 pc by installing Windows Media Feature Pack.

you can download it from microsoft just google: Windows Media Feature Pack

I tryed all the above triks before trying the media pack and that finaly worked for me an also for a friend

My problem was actually computer hardware related... the pc I was using I built myself in 2009 and I believe it was a USB compatibility issue I was having.. because it works just fine on any other pc. thanks for the help guys.

Hi all -- I have read this thread with interest and am still stumped with my own situation.
To summarise what I have got, and have tried:
S5 trying to connect to windows7 is coming up as "USB Device not recognized" and fails to connect. Windows reports a generic "Code 43 " error.

My S5 used to work fine, I regularly transfer music to my SD card form laptop. As far as I know I have not changed any settings.
I have tried my S5 in three different computers, multiple USB cables to no positive effect.
I tried my wife's S5 in one of those laptops and it connects fine (both internal storage and SD card recognition).
I tried the *#0808# and checked that MTP+ADB was selected (it was).
I have tried to forcibly update the windows drivers as well.

Either way, I am none the wiser. It all points to the phone itself and not windows7/drivers/cables.
But it still doesn't work :S

Check out the Lollipop for Dummies thread at the top of this forum - paragraph 1.3 - clear cache from recovery.

If it's not that, I'd start to suspect the usb port / circuit on the phone.

Has it been charging ok? Other behavior to make you question the port?

Hi EarlyMon, thanks for those suggestions. I am using version 4.4.2 at the moment (haven't gone to Lollipop) but I did just now follow the instructions in 1.3 and rebooted the phone and wiped the cache.
Same issue still exists.
Charging appears OK, when plugged into laptop/mains ... although there have been random times (and not very often) where it charges for about 5 secs, and then for a second stops ... just goes on-off-on-off making that little beeping sound every few seconds. Its done this from new and to be honest hasn't actually done this for a month or two so its likely not related.

The only reason I suspect the port is due to elimination. I've eliminated cables, specific computers (and drivers) by confirming normal operation with a 2nd S5 handset with same OS.

would it be worth me trying to update to Lollipop 5?

Frankly, I always think it's a bad idea to hope that a system update might cure an oncoming hardware problem.

If you're like me, you don't need the port to work for any normal data transfers - you can do it wirelessly with some really great options -

Check out "AirDroid: File & Notifications"

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sand.airdroid

Open your web browser to AirDroid, open the app on your phone - point the camera at the pc screen showing the QR code - bang! You're connected and ready to transfer files.

Do you have your own pc scripts to sync your data, your way, so you must have a drive letter for the phone?

Then you want "WebDAV Server"

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.theolivetree.webdavserver

Want to see your pc from your phone and control the transfers in a dual pane setup, phone on one side, pc on the other? Or just share your phone to your pc with a traditional web view?

Check out "X-plore File Manager"

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lonelycatgames.Xplore

And there's always auto syncing with Google Drive, Dropbox, etc, where you don't lift a finger and let the pc and phone sort out the file sharing via the cloud.

I've used all of the above and like all of them.

So my advice is, break the need for a data cable, find a strategy that works for you.

If the port starts to fail for charging - you have an S5, and a spare battery and external charger can be had for less than the price of a phone repair.

Solved!

I did this:
If you Samsung galaxy S5 is not showing a USB connection type, such as MTP-Media Device or PTP-Camera. Then follow these steps. Most people arecomplaining that no connection type appears when the device is connected. When they pull the notification tab down to check, nothing appears, only thenotification sound

>Enter Dialer

>*#0808#

>Where you see USB settings, check the MTP button and click Ok

>Reconnect your S5 and it could be recognized by your computer /Mac as MTPConnection type.
