I had the same issue but the solution was very simple. When I switched to a USB-3 cable the mobile was recognized. Strange that it did not work with USB-2...
Do you have a USB 3 motherboard?
When I want to communicate with the PC using my camera. I go to This PC and keep opening the disc or what ever until I see what I want, ex DCIM and then perform my task. I do not rely upon Kies and other apps.
