S5 vs HTC one

They didn't "listen to complaints", they were caught red-handed trying to fool end users, got called for it, and had to eat crow. ;)

Hmm, selective memory....?

Major benchmarking service delists Samsung and HTC phones it suspects of cheating

Maybe we should wait for the S5 to be thoroughly tested before throwing stones, just in case.

At least give Samsung credit where it's due, Samsung didn't have to remove these optimizations, especially if one of their competitors is still using them.

Also I made reference to Samsung scores now being legit, Samsung devices with new updates are now relisted, the optimizations are gone.

I have the S4 and will say that if you go with any phone w/o a removable battery, all is not lost. You can just purchase a portable USB charger to plug into your phone when its low on power. The only down sides are: 1) It will take much longer to charge it, especially if your still using your phone. 2) The charger will have to stay connected to your phone while it charges. I heard that the HTC One M8 has a special battery saving features, that not even the S5 has. Time will tell if its really true what they're saying.

The continuing, more general discussion of benchmarking as a method of comparison between devices has been split off to a new thread here.

Going forward, please confine posts in this topic to specific comparisons between the HTC One (M8) and the Samsung Galaxy S5 in order to keep it pertinent to others.

Media comparisons so far state the camera and battery life are better overall on the S5. FWIW....

I see no magic bullet for battery life as far as chips. Same chips so same polling of hardware.

I am in the same boat as the OP.
I use my spare battery every day and refuse to buy a phone without one. I am often unable to charge for 24 hrs plus, and use my phone a lot.

Went looking for a new phone yesterday.
Only the Samsungs have the user replaceable battery.
The S4 and 5 I find too big, and the mini versions are neutered in specs.

My ideal phone would be a moto x with the addition of a user replaceable battery and an SD card slot. Or maybe a S5/4 mini with the similar specs as the full size.

For now I am waiting and holding on to my 3.5year old moto photon.
Just wish it had 4G LTE and updated Android OS

I doubt you will see a higher spec small display device not called iPhone and even they are moving up in size soon.

I find the S4 much better than the M8 and S5 as far as one hand use. Still a great device.

You may find you can be a heavy user and get along just fine throughout the day without a replaceable battery. The current generation of phones today are much more efficient with their battery life than the Motorola photon.

Just something to consider :)

Maybe.
But if not then I am stuck with a phone that wont work for me.

I am going to wait to see what the S5 mini looks like, and hope it fits the bill.

The larger phones are out of the running because of their size, and the moto x is out because it lacks both a removable battery and an SD card.

For now I prefer to deal with the shortcomings of the photon than buy into any of the other options I see available.

Sony Xperia Z1 Compact: snapdragon 800, microSD, water-resistant, 4.3" display. Battery not removable though.

But I seem to recall that Sony devices are hard to find in the US.
