OK, I installed safe strap so I could boot into recovery and install Google Talk. When I boot into recovery and select install zip from sd card it says safe strap not enabled and I can't figure out how to enable it. Any suggestions.

TIA

You can't flash anything in non safe mode you have to be in safe. In recovery at the bottom there's safe boot menu, select that then toggle safe mode. After it's toggled you can flash things. Make a backup before you do that though.

In Clockwork Mod Recovery, scroll down to "Safe Boot Menu" and then "Toggle Safe System".

After you install safestrap, you have to run the app and choose the button to install recovery. Then, when you restart, you will be shown a menu for 10 seconds, giving you the ability to start Safestrap (by pressing menu), starting the system normally (by pressing search), or it will start normally after 10 seconds and press neither of the softkeys.

As others have said, you have to toggle Safestrap over to safe mode (see the How-to Safestrap page: How-To Safestrap
