Accessories Safe/unsafe ways to plug in my Fascinate?

Hi,

In the Dumb Questions category...

My Fascinate came (used) without the charger. I have been using a usb-to-micro-usb cable, which I plug either to my computer or to a USB charger that is plugged into a powerstrip.

Here's my question:

Is there a reason to buy the official charger?

What about for travel? I can travel with the USB charger if I want, but I'm not sure it has any surge protection.

What about using a charger that has the correct micro usb cable, but was made for another phone or electronic device? What do I need to look for to see if it's compatible - hz? mA?
