Samsung Captivate with Froyo spotted

I would almost bet that Froyo will be the first and last update (officially) for the captivate. I already heard about devices coming out with 2.4 in April. By this time, Samsung will be getting ready to put out the next gen Galaxy S2 or whatever it will be called. They won't bother with the captivate at that point.

It'll definitely be the last update for this phone. Andriod os is moving way to fast and that is becoming a problem. That being said I still won't go back to the fruit but if microsoft can keep up with apps and high end phones, I might have to switch.

But at what cost? It's more than just about app and OS updates.

I'd go with an (hacked) iPhone before I went with a Windows phone.

Although I understand and normally tend to adopt your positive attitude, there's a distinct lack of focus in this instance. The "bashing" you allude to relates to Captivate-specific issues, and reference to internal politics or corporate size is irrelevant. There is no excuse for a lack of communication or stonewalling regarding Froyo. Tell customers that there's been a delay and indicate why. They'll respect you more as an organization and will not feel ignored. Samsung and/or AT&T have failed at Public Relations 101 and that has led to disgruntled users. The din surrounding the failure to communicate has overshadowed much of the benefit that could have been derived from the update, and the cottage industry that has arisen providing custom ROMs had made the imminent offering of Froyo a yawn to many. And within the ranks of custom ROM users are individuals referred to in the software / hardware industries as "recommenders." There are strategic ramifications.

And you can scan over pretty much any sub-forum, for any phone and find the exact/similar complaints.

There could definitely be a legit excuse for it not coming out yet. At this point, with the bashing bandwagons, nothing in the way of an answer will be acceptable. It has already been proven that some of those griping about froyo not being released are griping about Gingerbread already.

Everyone assumes this and that, hears this and that, etc. The article above is nothing that hasn't been mentioned in this forum many times. I'll believe any official releases by ATT and/or Samsung.

I'm also not part of the bashing clubs. If I hated my phone/carrier as bad as some people come across I'd have something else.

I believe Cellular South just had Froyo released to them this week.

Food for thought:

Verizon has iPhone antenna issues, just like AT&T.

An AT&T Rep told me today the new Windows Phones are weak and locked down.

He also said the new AT&T Android Phone that just came out can be docked and can be accessed with a monitor and keyboard. I saw the display. There's also a laptop looking thing the phone can dock on and be used like a portable computer.

Fine. No problem. Just keep in touch with your users. Respect them. It's good business.

Likely true.

It has already been proven that some of those griping about froyo not being released are griping about Gingerbread already.

Some people aren't happy unless they aren't happy. Me? I took action by successfully adopting a custom ROM. I couldn't care less about Samsung at this point. That said, I do feel for those who crave an improved operating system but either don't have the technical savvy to flash a custom ROM or would rather practice an admirable, albeit lengthy, measure of patience.

It serves as validation by an individual with serious industry credentials rather than coming from one of the great unwashed like me.

Had I foreseen the trappings of dealing with a company that had no interest in communicating with their users, I would have avoided the device. But Plan B (taking things into my own hands) has muted the fact that my trust was misplaced.

Well that comes as no surprise. People only think the Windows phones are the ultimate perfect amazing phone because the ads tell them so. For some reason, people conveniently forget who the company is behind the OS... and their track-record for quality or caring about the consumer.

That would be the Motorola Atrix. I don't believe it's actually available yet, just announced. Were they actually selling them?

I'm having a hard time following along because I'm not sure what the main point of the thread is anymore.

I'm new to smart-phones in general, and I've only had my captivate for 2 weeks roughly. So I'm not as high-strung about this as everyone else seems to be. I certainly welcome the upgrade, but I can wait for a little while.

I think one of the problems is the fact that they release updates like crazy and scatter them about. If there was no newer OS floating around I think most people would just be calm about it. But knowing that there is a newer edition out there is just making people froth at the mouth. If they didn't know about it they just wouldn't care. This is supported by the fact that people are complaining about about gingerbread when they haven't even had Froyo yet. They just know there's a newer version out there, so that's what they want.

They way I see it, they HAVE to release an update for the phone regardless. Whether is 2.2 or 2.3 or something else is anyone's guess, but they know they have to do it at this point.

One of my theories is this: Phones get pumped out like bagels at a bread factory these days, so the companies are just trying to keep up with the phone manufacturers and their weekly release of new models. I feel like in order for them to get sales up for these new phones is to offer them with something newer and better than the last one, which I know seems obvious, but not just new tech and hardware, also the OS systems. I get the impression that they're holding 2.2+ off on the older phones so they can give their new phones a chance to sell, using the fact that those DO have 2.2+. Sleezy? Sure. Smart? Probably...it could certainly work on some people that are impatient enough.

But I also think that once the initial sales of said new phones has some time to level out, then they will apply the updates to the older phones.

Again, this is only one of my theories, but its also the most reasonable one that I have. From a business standpoint, it makes sense. Though, they can't just tell us that's what they're doing, if they are.

This could be completely whack too, and they'll just release it tomorrow. Who knows?:confused:

I should have read this article before I posted that...sorry. But I see I'm not the only one who thinks this. He mentions it has zero credibility, which may be true, but that doesn't make it unreasonable or absurd. Samsung staying so quiet about it only further insinuates that they just don't have a reasonable explanation for it. Quite a mystery.

I'm having a hard time following along because I'm not sure what the main point of the thread is anymore.

Think of it like this.

Android --> Windows
iPhone --> Macintosh
Android Phone --> PC running Windows
Android 2.1 --> Windows 2000
Android 2.2 --> Windows XP

There are lots of PC's (Android phones) made in all sorts of shapes, sizes, colors.

You buy one. It only runs Windows 2000 (Android 2.1). The manufacturer says, it will be upgraded to Windows XP (Android 2.2) next month / any day now / RSN.

Some people don't care. Others care very much because they would like to install apps that don't run on Windows 2000 (or Android 2.1).

For example:

Skype
Netflix
(and plenty of others)

That's why some people are unhappy that Samsung / AT&T are not upgrading the OS. Because there is a growing number of important apps that won't run.

Meanwhile, while there so many shapes, sizes and colors of PCs (Android phones) from many manufacturers, the Macintosh (iPhone) is only made by Apple and only a few to choose from.

Why go back to bloatware and lag? I will stay with custom ROMs, now the developers will have 'official' Froyo to play with.

that is exactly what i was thinking the customer roms are gonna be awesome once there is an official release

I cannot wait

That's definitely a good analogy DannyB.

Like I said before, I'm new to the current phones. I didn't know Samsung had promised it right away. I just knew about the captivate and I thought it was a good choice as it was for my upgrade.

I agree that they've definitely screwed up, and offered no explanation...and that's just horrible customer support and appreciation. And its true that not all apps and functions work without 2.2, which makes it even worse.

I'm happy with the phone, and I think 2.1 is great also, but the way these companies run things just tarnishes the user experiences and expectations. Its all about the quick buck these days. It almost seems like, "technology moves so fast now, why should we try to support them when no one will have it very long?" is their mantra. Weaksauce.

i really love the custom ROM. dont see living without it now.

though theres a possibility when my wife gets an upgrade.....i may get the Atrix and give her my cappy.....i dont know where i will be then

you make a good point.

besides all that, for me theres just something satisfying about running custom. outside the box.

I won't be going back to stock, I'm loving using my phone as an access point for my wifes iPad :eek:, any update released by AT&T will surely disable that awesome feature.

(yes, I'm ashamed to admit that there is an ipad in my home, but I wanted to prove to my wife how much I truly loved her so I gave in and bought it for her. She knows it was a true sacrifice for me to fork over any of my hard earned cash to Steve Jobs, and she appreciates it)

This is all great news.

I have a question or two though (probably silly, but I'm curious): Assuming we get an update, will all of our stuff be erased if we switch over or will it need to be backed up? Also, will it be an "over the air" update or what?

Gracias.

Hit the thanks instead of the quote :( (ETA on the desktop app I can remove it)

Always back up if you have stuff on the phone you don't want to lose.
