Help Samsung Fascinate 2.3 problem..

I am also having battery issues. The thing goes dead after a few hours, and the screen won't turn itself off. I set it down and came back and hour later it's still on with the wallpaper going. Also, I check the battery stats and Android OS is the biggest chunk! It lags in strange spots, and when I try to hit the power button to kill the screen, it just keeps taking screen shot images! I have had to pull the battery out three times now just to make it stop. I am not impressed. This phone used to last me two days, now it barely lasts six hours. I am attempting the uninstall of Google Maps, will let everyone know how that goes.

good luck, I un installed google maps a couple days ago and the problem is still there :/ I still have not yet "formatted the memory card" so I will try that next.

I'm having trouble too. I was on rooted stock 2.2 last night, then my phone was stuck on the Samsung booting screen. I had to odin back to ed01, then i installed the 2.3.5 update. I then rooted and reinstalled my apps via titanium backup. Now I'm getting a bunch of FCs, and I can't receive texts! I'm not sure what to do. I've been uninstalling apps 1 by 1 to see if that will help. I might just go complain to Verizon tomorrow and try for a new phone. This is BS, I'm so sick of Verizon pushing out updates!

ok so i was having the same problems. my battery didnt last long, it kept shutting off, sometimes in order to turn it back on i had to plug the phone in, wait for it to show that it was charging, then turn it on. and it kept freezing. so yesterday i took it in to verizon.... boy did they help.......ooops. i mean didnt help....they told me that the only thing i could do is either wait for a new patch to come out from samsung, or do a hard reboot....so i called *611 and asked tech. support if they had any ideas or hints. the lady said that they have had tons of calls and issues with this and that i could either wait for a patch to come out or do a hard re-boot.....wow what a lot of freaking help. so i did a hard reboot and it seams to work fine...for now. the only problem is that my back up assistance only backed up half of my contacts. ugggg. im thinking about switching to us cellular

Heres my 2 cents:

At 4am 2 days ago, mine updated on its own. From this point forward, my fascinate is a POS.

It caused me to be late this am. Last night, I took it off charge at 100%, alarm set, but it didnt go off this am.
When I hit the power button to turn screen on to see why, it showed the big battery on front and blinked.....as though, cant turn on cause its dead.
I plugged charger up to it....showed green full, but then it "would" power on.

Showed full charge(nearly...94%). So I soft reset, still wouldnt turn on....again needed a charger connected just to power up.
I took to 2 verizon stores and they both said....HARD RESET. DAMN. Ive had to hard reset this phone twice already through ownership for quirky issues here and there.

So I came home, did the hard reset and it booted with 2.3.5.....but no keyboard in any menu...text, email....nothing. Did another hard reset and this time it was like it was when I got it. After 2 hrs, I managed to get my phone back like it was before hard reset......but it still has issue. Power off all on its on sometimes, and wont boot without charger.
If I turn it off, it will not boot until a charger is connected. I give up. Im gonna make them replace it.....I wish I could pay difference and get different phone......at this point iPhone 4s. Im sick of the quirky Windows vista like crap all the time. It started out fast, but in 6months it became slow, laggy and force closes, total spaz outs.
Im gonna replace the battery to see if thats the issue.....I have noticed the life hasnt been as good.....maybe its my fault cause I keep it plugged up so much while using it...i.e listening to podcasts or playing games.....why not plug it in if Im next to outlet right?

OK. UPDATE on all this ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
I went back to Verizon, she hooked it up and found the Kernel needed updating, she did and said I needed to another factory reset....UGH
After much hesitating, I gave in, factory reset it and did NOT reinstall my apps that was backed up. I decided to wait for a day, then install one app per day of my most trusted and used.

IT WORKS!!!!!!! It works great. Also, I went too App Market and installed instead of using the back ups......idea is kinda fresh install if it matters.
Whatever, its fast again, it doesn't lag and the battery life is great now.
I took it off charge last night at 100%, went to bed at 10pm, this morning at 8am it was sitting at 98%. Thats way better than the 75% it was doing and the 45% before the kernel update.

Something I have been more aware of is apps running in background that are unneeded.
Example: After you kill the app(Facebook), it still runs processes in background.
Thats stupid and no way to turn it off. So I uninstalled it....bye bye. I just use the mobile site version and its the same and doesn't run after you kill it.
Another which I hated to give the boot....was GOOGLE MAPS. But, once fired up, it runs in background even after I killed it....NO NO. Now I just use Bing maps or the Google map from the page instead of app.

Now when I install an app, I check it.....you wanna run processes in the background....do it somewhere else, not my phone.
I'm convinced my issues were bad update and bad apps.
Its sad the apps can do this but....
I guess if you have 5 or 6 apps always running some process in background, that's why the lag happens and the battery slowly drips away.
Its very snappy now, especially since I gave FB app the boot.

So nice to have my phone back right, good luck, maybe this will help someone.....as I know its very frustrating.

Thanks for all of that info jarb01 and photogdave.. For me, as Wick & Fearless stated above, the problem seemed to be Google maps, I formatted the memory card, rebooted it and un installed google maps and after that the battery was draining normally.

Can't wait until Nov 2012 when I'm eligible for an upgrade, deuces Fascinate. lol

Welcome. Yeah, me too on upgrade. I think I jinxed myself this am. Not 30min after I posted, I picked my phone up and it was off.....pressed the power button and got empty battery icon. It did power up but, its at it again. Everything else seems fine, but the idea it did something else again, just shows it wont last. And I doubt its an app. The apps I have on now have been here for a week, so the idea it may be an app is unlikely.

I think I may add a line to my shared plan(to beat the lack of available upgrade), just buy an iPhone 4s and be done with it. Im just droided out.
Its too Vista like, I cant take it anymore.

I was considering going the iPhone route too, I hear the iPhone 5 comes out next August so I'll most likely get that. Lol @ us bringing iPhone onto the Android forums haha. Haters gon' hate!

I don't care. I get sick of people being so partial to a stupid phone....taking everything so personal. You walk into Verizon and they act like they don't even sell the iPhone.
Cause they've been so stuck with Android all these years. They will throw every excuse in the world at you to convince you to go with Droid and how sorry Apple is.

Look, I think Android phones are nice, they have the pros. Theres a lot I'm gonna miss if I switch.......but let me say what I want more than any feature etc...... I WANT MY %$#@#$ PHONE TO WORK!!!!!!!!!!!! ALL THE TIME....without hard resets.
Im tired of the Vista like issues on my phone. I hate that quirky, buggy crap on Windows Vista and I hate it with Android phones.

Then you have those who say, its because you have the fascinate. NO. I have a ton of friends with all brands of Android phones and they all deal with this from time to time at some point between the necessary Factory reset intervals........except for the ones who are so entangled in their allegence to all that is Droid to ever say anything is wrong with their phone.
This wouldnt be so bad if when there was these crazy issues someone could say, Its THIS and heres how to fix it.......but they cant. Its like the lockness monster of issues. Uh, try a factory reset and hope for the best.......
I know Im gonna get hammered as a troll. But Im trying to give Droid a chance. I wanna like my phone. I bought it over the iPhone.....hoping it was better, but..........someone prove me wrong. Not someone with a 10 day old newer than new just released 4G Android phone. Someone thats had their droid for 2 yrs and it works as good as it did the day they bought it.......please convince me. Cause I work with 4 people that iPhone 3 thats still cruising without bugs. Several iPhone 4's and they just grin everytime they see me rip the battery out of the back of my phone.

Couldn't agree more. Also the situation with our phones and the way Verizon handles it... "Sorry, gonna have to wait for a patch to come out." REALLY?! Then you better give me free data usage until it's released.. At least for people with the Fascinate. It's just that the Fascinate is getting old, it got discontinued just recently so maybe we get screwed because there are few people that still have the phone. I don't know.. All I know is come next year I'm upgrading.

went from a fascinate to an iPhone 4S. Couldn't be happier with my phone now. Like the poster above, I enjoy the customizations and whatnot with the android platform but more than that I WANTED/NEEDED A DAMN PHONE THAT JUST WORKS....ALL THE TIME. I'm sick of dealing with samsung/verizon (who knows who's to blame) and the sh*tty updates that break more than they fix.

Funny though, on the iPhone forums tons of iPhone people are going to the Galaxy Nexus or Galaxy II and raving about how much better it is than their iPhone.

Different things for different people I guess. I was just sick of all the issues with my fascinate... stupid things like it taking screenshots all the time or NEVER being able to get a GPS lock. The OS degrading to the point where I had to use ODIN and reflash the stock firmware on it (only once but could use it again... if I still used the phone). Getting to carry a spare battery around with me cause if I had to use my phone for anything useful for more than 30 mins, the battery took a nosedive.

After using the iPhone for a week I can't believe all of the stupid sh*t I used to put up with on my fascinate.

Thanks Samsung. You may make super awesome screens and cutting edge devices but you dropped the ball with the fascinate. Unfortunately that was my first experinece with smartphones and it was a bad one.

I've been begging my wife to try to get a used iPhone 4 or get one of our relatives eligible for an upgrade to get her a 4S. In any event, when the iPhone 5 comes out she'll either get my 4s or she'll get the 5. I can't wait.

Thats my exact point.....and oh the screen shots....drives me crazy.
I think Im swithing just after Christmas. Im gonna just add a line, pay 299 for the 4s 32GB and be done with Android. I played with the 4s again today at BB and the more I get familiar with it, the more I like it and see it doing exactly what I want.
Thos iPhone users who switched.......to each their own. I know its human nature to think the other device is better.....but I'll bet those same people in about 6 to 8 months will be wishing they never did it.
The phone I played with today....I opened whatever it is that shows the items currently open or running.....because it was a store phone, I counted 23 items open at the bottom while I was messing with it. You do that to my Fascinate and it would explode all over the wall.
I closed all that crap and it was cruising.

Im sure there will be some things Ill miss like you said.....but I want a phone that works all the time.....correctly, when I want it.
Im looking forward to all the cool, integrated devices made buy everyone for Apple products. You wont find anything to dock a droid anything in.
I have an alarm clock/stereo Id finally be able to dock my phone in.

I was worried about it not being 4g.....got 2 friends with a droid charge and HTC that runs 4g...yeah its fast, but real unstable....so who cares.....I got 25Mb internet at home. Plus, Im in more places with no 4g anyway....

well, you sound a lot like me and if that's true, you won't regret it.

Sure there are some things that I don't like about the iphone... but they're so minor, they're almost non-issues. The only ones I can think of off of the top of my head:

-- the iPhone does not tag each individual text with a date/timestamp. There are many times that I won't remember when something happened but I'll remember that I txt someone about it right when it happened. I refer back to the txt to see what time. iPhone does not log this info.

-- iPhone does not date/timestamp pics/vids. Similar to above, I like knowing that when I take a pic or vid of my daughter that I will forever know what day that it was taken on. iPhone doesn't do this (out of the box).

-- Bigger is better. This really isn't a negative on apple or the iPhone but trust me when I say this: You want the bigger one. Sounds like you're gonna get a 32 gig. I actually had one of those ordered but reverted to a 16gig. Problem is I intended to replace my 16 gig nano (~12 gig full) with the iphone and underestimated the size of pics/vids it takes. I can make a 16GB work but to be honest, I should have just stuck with the 32. I'm not rich but for $100 more, it wouldn't have been a big deal. Still no problem, I just can't keep "that stupid CD that my coworker gave me to check out" on there all the time lol.

-- Visually, the iPhone doesn't show me pics of my contacts in the text app. I know, I know... dumb... (like I said, non issues) but for me I keep my google contacts full of pics so I can easily identify people on the fly. I'm just waiting for the day that I accidentally txt the wrong person lol.

-- You can't delete photos from the phone. You can delete ones you've taken, but not ones you sync onto the phone.

That's about all I can come up with off of the top of my head. Even though it doesn't have 4g, coming from a fascinate, it'll be a large upgrade. 4g is overrated, underdeveloped, and a battery drain. It's perfect for Android users however. Those who want to be on the "cutting edge" of technology even if it's at the expense of usability. Which, hey, if that's someones thing, I'm not doggin it... Just saying it's not for me. I work in the tech industry. I work for a (very) large software company. The largest in the U.S. I feel like I've "been there, done that" in terms of hardware/software. Don't get me wrong, the urge to tinker is still there. I really want to take my old fascinate and flash 2.3 on there just for kicks... but I can't afford to do that on my go-to phone... nor do I think I should *have* to.

Anyway, I'm rambling at this point. Get the iPhone. You'll love it. Don't listen to the android fanboys... You aren't truly a fan of something unless you've seen the other side... So go with the iPhone... at least you'll be able to say you've tried out both. Not to mention you'll love the music aspect, camera (clutch for kid/santa photos as I've learned), usability, screen, size, etc etc etc etc! See you over at MacRumors!

Great info man. Thats what Ive been looking for actually. Those little things different. Thats why I keep going back and toying with it, just to see if I find something.

I hate that about text and pic info LOL. I do that very thing. I have thousands of texts in my phone and don't delete all the time just because its been useful to refer back to a text you sent right when something happened.
I had a customer tell me once I took to long to get there. In trying to defend myself that I didnt, I remembered, hey, I sent you a text right when I got in my vehicle, found that date time and then I called you for you to meet me outside when I arrived.....got that date time. Once I showed it had taken 20minutes less then when she stated, I was off the hook. Guess time drags when you wait LOL. But its been useful.

I like the exif data in pics. Is that still there in Exif or metadata inside image.....just not the actual stamp on the outside, physically on the image.
I ask, cause Im a photographer and theys always been a nice tool in exif data to find date and time shot.......another bail out there I wont bore you with LOL.

I do plan on the 32, just because. I know you cant add once you buy, so better to have it and not need it, then to need it and not have it. I also know going from a 720p video to 1080p will chew up even more.

Cant delete pics from phone.....wow thats stupid. I was told Id hate the issue of needing iTunes for certain things.
I like iTunes, but I definitely think its stupid that I cant delete added items from a computer.
But.......BUT, I think this too in real world may be a non issue. I have images I put on my phone from my real camera, for display/conversation/sales etc just to show examples. Not one time have I ever had the need to delete one. When I do move them or delete etc, Im USB'd to PC adding more....I can just delete then.

One thing that might be a biggy is hiding images. I have some......"fun" ones I like to keep in a folder, hidden from view and they cant be seen in the gallery.....know what I mean.
I just put images in folder, add a ".nomedia" file and whola they're hidden.
I'm told that's history if I switch.
But all in all, I think I can past this stuff.
I was there today and the salesman was trying his damnedest to sell me on a newer Android. Claiming it would be stable. Yeah, thats been the pitch since 2.1, and here we are.
Stupid things like, "You cant remove the battery" I wouldnt need to if the phone didnt need a reset once a week.

Or "The Rezound is dual core" so is 4s.....next

The iPhone isnt 4G.....so, theres only 3 places here that is anyway, and those arent stable half time. NEXT

And he went on and on, now Im rambling but thanks for the info, its helping knowing these little things.

See you over at MacRumors!

I made it over there. I saw where there were several asking about battery and you commented.
The answers are exactly right. Usage and I thought everyone knew to cycle the battery. I put mine through a full cycle everytime I can. Down to 1-2%. Turn off, charge to 100%, turn on.....lather rinse repeat.
Of course my SGS problem wasnt so much battery.

I tried to buy one today and they were out of stock....of course. I expect that right now. This wasn't an idea of a Christmas present to myself......I just happened to get fed up at "this" time LOL. Oh well, when I can, I'll snag it.

All in all it's different -- but better. Things about the fascinate that were 8/10 on the annoying scale are either 0/10 or 2/10 on the iPhone.

coming from a fascinate you won't be blown away with the screen cause the screen on the fascinate is probably the best part of the phone.

You'll find things you don't necessarily like about the iPhone... but having a phone that JUST WORKS and a company that will actually SUPPORT the phone is a great thing.

Also, look into AppleCare if you're a warranty kinda person... I dropped the Verizon Asurion and went with the AppleCare... so I'm kinda hit if I lose the phone or it gets stolen... but anything else will be handled by Apple and their superb customer service.

-- iPhone does not date/timestamp pics/vids. Similar to above, I like knowing that when I take a pic or vid of my daughter that I will forever know what day that it was taken on. iPhone doesn't do this (out of the box).

Yes it does. Oh BTW, I bought a white 4s 2 days ago. I've shot some with it, and when you pull images off phone out of camera roll to PC, the entire metadata is intact.
Just highlight image in folder, and at bottom of page all the image data is there(windows 7 anyway). So you will be able to keep track of the childs image time/date.
I wonder if the text massage is the same......in other words, its there we just haven't found it or its not "on"

As for phone......Jesus Christ its sweeeeeeet. Smooth as butter. The touch screen interface is so 1:1, i have sense its always doing exactly what I want it to do.

Speed....WOW!. The WiFi is very strong on this phone. Where my Fascinate side by side on other end of house had NO signal, the 4s has full signal from router and its fast. The Fasc never tagged over 17Mb/s on WiFi sitting 2 feet away, the 4s is real smooth and zings over the 35Mb/s and then holds steady 25(my service) even on other end of house.

Loading web pages and scrolling, much better. Loading Google docs and reading, super smooth.

Its was a great move.

Im getting used to iTunes......whew, that's been a chore. But I get it now. Its odd, like Windows Media Player to do all interfacing.....very odd.

But so far that's really my only gripe, that and not being able to control You Tube video quality :(

But pros are definitely worth those few hassles.

My Sister is having these same problems with her Fascinate. Battery dead very quickly & the camera issue. Anyone have a fix for this? Please PM me if you find one. :(

Well my Fascinate is still screwing up. I gave it to my 7yr old to play games on after I got the iPhone 4s. I happy as hell with my new phone, but I did a factory reset on the fascinate just before giving it to her. The only Apps I installed were Angry Bird.....other than that its factory and now its still giving the screen where it shows its connected to USB even when its not.
It hangs up, battery level isnt that great.

I knows its just a game toy for her now, but it still bothers me, just glad I got away from Droid.
Only reason I keep checking this site is to see if I can at least find a solution for the USB deal.....maybe soon someone will figure it out.

So I've come to realize there is no fixing this for me, I thought I fixed the problem but it started again.. First with the phone not turning on again.. The phone sais it's the OS that's using up all the battery.. Something like 60%-70% every time. Idk what to do, Thinking using my xmas cash and upgrading to something 4G lol

Congrats on the iPhone photogdave! I'm glad you like it! I still LOVE mine... the "new-toy-itus" hasn't yet worn off and I doubt it will.

That's your fix folks. Move on to a different device.

Oh man I love my iPhone 4s. Just today, my daughter came to me and said the battery was dead.....it wasnt. It just shut off, and wouldnt boot until I plugged in a charger.

Ive factory reset this phone 3 times since Christmas.....still doing it.

Im gonna make Verizon replace it regardless whether I bought another phone or not.

Its the only way guys....move on.

Well, I posted in an already-established thread about this, but the only person to respond sort of shoo-ed me off to the Fascinate forum. This is really a general Droid problem, as it's been happening on all sorts of Droid phones..but I'll throw it out here. Anyone with a Samsung Fascinate experience this: I'll be in a thread with someone, texting back and forth. I'll reply to their text and suddenly, randomly, the text will go to a completely different person!! The name on the top of the screen will change (it has happened with people with the same carrier and people with different carriers) and the text will just go to them..no stopping it. Obviously, this can be a little awkward (or downright damaging) depending upon who receives the text! It happened when I bought the phone in July and I brought it back to the store, where an employee had me change to a third party messaging app (Handcent) .That seemed to fix it until last month when it began happening again. Verizon then told me that their stock sms app had a problem like that, but it was now fixed. They had me uninstall Handcent and reinstall the stock app. The problem continued to occur. Then they had me do a factory reset. The problem continued. Now I just received a replacement phone yesterday. So far it hasn't happened..but it's random, and doesn't happen every day or to every text, so it's hard to say if it's fixed or not. Has anyone had anything like this happen to them?

sugarskull, I have heard about that but it has never happened to me.. Recently switched from my Fascinate to the GNex. Amazing phone super fast!
